Who are Making Space? 1000 employees 35 years old 400 volunteers
We are a national charity and leading provider of health and social care services. Our high quality, person-centred services and accommodation support adults of all ages, with a diverse range of needs, including: Mental health conditions Learning disabilities Dementia Older people with age-related concerns 35 years old 1000 employees supported over 200,000 individuals 400 volunteers We have been helping adults with care and support needs, and their carers, to lead independent and fulfilling lives for more than 35 years. Our high quality, person-centred services and accommodation support adults of all ages who are living with mental health conditions, learning disabilities, dementia and older people with age-related concerns. We work closely with the people we support, their families and carers, our members and a range of partner organisations, to ensure we continuously deliver services that meet the needs of the people we support.

Our services Our services are personalised and flexible to help the people who use them to lead fulfilling lives and reach their own personal goals and ambitions. We provide services in the heart of local communities, in the comfort of people’s own homes, and specialist care and support services. Our service users and their families are at the heart of everything we do.

We now have an independent hospital for people with dementia in Manchester, day centres in Doncaster, extra care schemes in Darlington and community services which include dementia cafes and community services in Doncaster, Derby, Bury and Oldham. Making Space has also invested our own money into building 14 purpose built dementia friendly flats Dementia SPACE team DEEP groups

Our Dementia SPACE Team
Support any employee with a key interest in dementia, from across Making Space, to develop through education, reflection and action planning Develop policies, innovative projects and team developments to improve dementia care across Making Space Support anyone in a caring role by offering practical, clinical and emotional support Our team supports staff by delivering quality dementia training, providing services with a tool kit which enables them to deliver high quality services. The toolkit includes activity resources, fact sheets, educational programmes and we are currently rolling out a pain assessment tool kit, so staff are able to identify the signs and symptoms of when people are experiencing pain.

How to refer to our service

The support we provide At Making Space we understand that it's natural to have some anxiety when you receive a dementia diagnosis. Our North Yorkshire Dementia Support service provides support, information and guidance for those living with memory loss, confusion or dementia, and for their carers. DEEP Vibes The Dementia Engage & Empower Project (DEEP), brings together groups of people with dementia from across the UK. In Scarborough the DEEP VIBES group supports people living with dementia and carers, to work together to create positive change in their community. It is also a great place for you to meet and support people in a similar situation to yourself. DEEP Vibes meets every third Wednesday of the month 10:00am - 12:00pm Boden Room, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Westborough, Scarborough YO11 1JW

Dementia friendly music and movement
Gentle, creative sessions using movement, and having fun in a friendly environment An opportunity to explore and express yourself creatively, for people living with dementia and their family and friends. Session finish up with coffee and cake, included in the price. Thursdays 11am-1pm Outreach rooms Stephen Joseph Theatre, Westborough, Scarborough YO11 1JW for 10 weeks each term £35 per term book at Box Office

START Strategies for Relatives Coping interventions for family carers of people living with dementia
Manual based 1-1, eight session intervention Promoting the development of coping strategies amongst carers of people with dementia and works with carers to identify individual difficulties and implement strategies. It is a structured psychological intervention that has been evaluated in a pragmatic Randomised Controlled trial. Demonstrated that the intervention was both clinically and cost effective, which was sustained two years post intervention and suggests that rates of clinical depression in carers were lower.

Our Dementia Law Clinic
The Dementia Law Clinic is a free service set up by Making Space in partnership with the Legal Advice Centre at University of Manchester and Dementia UK. It’s a free legal, admiral nursing and communication support to those living with dementia and their carers advice on many complex issues, via Skype. home disputes, Advance Decisions to refuse treatment Community Care Assessments , Continuing Healthcare Court of Protection Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) Disputes of Best Interests for those who lack capacity Disputes of Mental Capacity Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) Provision of care (in relation to care homes) Trust and Inheritance and probate This is done via One-to-one consultations via Skype

Working in partnership
At Making Space, we pride ourselves on working in partnership with other organisations and embrace working together in our shared goal of increasing the wellbeing of those with dementia and their carers. Age UK, Carers Resource, Ryedale Carers support and Support for Carers. Scarborough and Ryedale CMHT, Health and Adult Services, Alzheimer’s Society. We are offering Dementia Friends Training to local groups, GP staff teams and Health and Adult Services teams. . We invest in our people, encouraging and facilitating their ongoing professional and personal development. We create an environment where our people feel motivated and empowered to collaborate and innovate, champion their own ideas, and take responsibility for themselves and their teams. We trust each other to be open and honest, and support each other to do our best. We aim to work in true and equal partnership with our service users, across all levels of the organisation. We recognise that everyone has commitments outside of the workplace, so we encourage flexible working that balances home and work life.
