3 Last Mile/Terminal Area Planning Issues
Physical and geometric limitations Congestion and competition for track capacity Identification of creative, low cost solutions that can reduce travel times without increasing speeds Station development Increasingly complex as development goals compete against each other Improving access to intercity passenger rail Multimodal solutions, including transit partnerships and bicycle access

4 Last Miles into Chicago: Challenges in the Chicago Terminal Area
56 Amtrak trains operate in the Chicago Terminal Area with heavy freight and commuter traffic CREATE team identifies 70 projects to improve transportation flow in the Chicago Terminal Area Chicago Terminal Planning Study to complement CREATE and expand on planning work completed by Corridor studies and Chicago Terminal Working Group Completed Englewood Flyover in May 2016 Eliminates conflicts between Metra, Amtrak, and Norfolk Southern operations

5 Portland Union Station & Eugene Layover Track Projects
Station track capacity challenges Relocated high shed and pedestrian access and rearranged the station building Increased capacity by accommodating stopped trains north and south of high shed Eugene Layover Track Project Two-mile delay prone, non-revenue move Development of a stub-end layover track at Eugene Station Negotiated closure of one crossing that enabled the design to meet standards while also creating a quite zone through downtown.

6 The Minnesota Station Experience
St. Paul Union Depot renovation Secured funding from four separate federal programs Challenges included federal reporting, stakeholder coordination, finding skilled labor, maintaining the historic nature of the building, signaling the station tracks. Target Field Station development Constrained by adjacent development, overhead highway infrastructure, existing freight operations, bike trail, and the siting of a new baseball stadium. Developed bi-level station that is incorporated into the stadium building and serves light-rail, commuter, and future intercity rail.

7 NC By Train Last Mile & Connectivity Initiatives
Providing connectivity to the Piedmont Service by supporting complementary last mile transportation modes Partnership with local transit systems and development of a common transit pass Advertised bike racks onboard and installation of bike lids at stations New station development Raleigh Union Station to be completed in 2018 Charlotte Gateway Station to be completed in 2021 Designed to accommodate intercity & commuter rail, bus, taxi, and bicycle
