3 Project Selection Choose criteria that interest you / the team, as positives. Just for example, you came up with: A. Good match to team skills B. Technically complex C. Creative D. Market Potential E. Industry sponsorship available Rank their importance relative to each other. The book uses this scale 1=equal, 3=moderately more important, 5=strongly more important, … 9=extremely more important. It is very subjective.

4 A B C D E Geometric mean Weight gm/sum A – skills 1 5 3 2.954 0.47 B – complex 1/5 1/3 0.644 0.10 C – creative 0.725 0.12 D – market 1.380 0.22 E – sponsor 0.582 0.09 sum = 6.285 And suppose these three projects are being considered 1 – IEEE robotic competition 2 – Industry sponsored project to design new test protocol 3 – Design a thing to help people find lost items

5 Then for each criterion use the same method to rate the projects against each other
1 – IEEE robotic competition 2 – Industry sponsored project to design new test protocol 3 – Design a thing to help people find lost items e.g. for criterion E, the possibility of industry sponsorship 1 2 3 Geometric mean Weight gm/sum 1 - robots 1/7 1/3 0.362 0.08 2 – new test 7 5 3.271 0.73 3 - thing 1/5 0.843 0.19 sum = 4.476 Do that for all the criteria.

6 Think carefully about how you feel about that.
And put everything in a table weight 1 robots 2 new test 3 thing A – skills 0.47 0.41 0.23 0.36 B – complex 0.10 0.51 0.19 0.30 C – creative 0.12 0.40 0.29 0.31 D – market 0.22 0.00 0.90 E - sponsor 0.09 0.08 0.73 0.25 0.45 So it looks as though designing a new thing for finding lost items is your chosen project. But then – Think carefully about how you feel about that.

7 Needs Identification In other words, you must be absolutely sure you know what the problem is before trying to solve it.

9 The Needs Statement

10 The Objectives Statement

11 Research Survey! Are you reinventing the wheel? Provide a summary of your research.

12 Sometimes helpful: An Objective Tree
