Pythagorean Theorem and Distance
Module A2- Lesson 1
2
Coordinate System Can be used to plot points and graph lines.
Rectangular coordinate system (a set of two number lines) Horizontal line = x-axis Vertical line = y-axis
3
Coordinate System In quadrant I, x and y are positive
In quadrant II, x is negative, but y is positive In quadrant III, x and y are negative In quadrant IV, x is positive, but y is negative The center, or intersection of the two axis is equal to (0,0)
4
Right Triangle A triangle that has one right angle, which measures 90 degrees and two angles that are acute and complementary (add to 90 degrees)
5
Hypotenuse The longest side of a right triangle.
The side opposite of the right angle.
6
Leg The sides that form the right angle.
7
Pythagorean Theorem The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
8
Find the Length of the Hypotenuse
9
Find the Length of a Leg
10
Distance Distance formula gives the distance between two points in a coordinate plane.
11
Use the Distance Formula
