Final Report

The Beginning of Pride House PyeongChang
1/17 The Beginning of Pride House PyeongChang In July 2015, two KSCRC activists (Holic and Candy) were invited by Pride House Toronto to attend the Sports Inclusion Summit. In this Summit, KSCRC activists learned from Pride House International about previous Pride House projects which began since 2010, and also what it means to have Pride House along with international mega-sporting events and what the achievements they have had. KSCRC activists decided to hold Pride House PyeongChang for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics as for the first of its attempt in Asia, as a way to publicize LGBTQ rights within sports and to talk about equal and inclusive Olympics.

2/17 In 2016 and 2017 During the two years of 2016 and 2017, we were supported by the Gender Equality Grant from Korea Foundation for Women. With this grant, we promoted about the idea of Pride House, and created opportunities to enjoy sports together within the LGBTQ community, and finally raised various issues about LGBTQ rights and sports by giving lectures and discussion forums. ▷ Pride House press conference ▷ Pride House community booth at the Seoul Queer Culture Festival ▷ Community organizing by two Bowling competitions and a pocket ball competition ▷ Public lecture by invited guest Keph Sennet from Pride House International ▷ Public forum on the impact of hate on LGBTQ people ▷ Introducing openly LGBTQ athletes to the public ▷ Sharing various news articles on LGBTQ and sports

2018 Pride House PyeongChang : Summary
3/17 2018 Pride House PyeongChang : Summary With the 2018 Pride House PyeongChang, we attempted to publicize the visibility of sexual minorities during the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, and to promote prides within LGBTQ community to enjoy sports by our media presence and by holding various events such as Pride House exhibition, viewing party, and selfie participation event. We also published the Sexual Minority and Sports Media Guideline to offer a reporting reference for media; and finally ran the Discrimination Monitoring Center to monitor any discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

2018 Pride House PyeongChang : Background
4/17 2018 Pride House PyeongChang : Background The International Olympic Committee (IOC) manifested that any kind of discrimination based on sexual orientation should be diminished in its Olympic Charter Article 6 after 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics; The PyeongChang Olympic Committee (POC) also stated a non-discrimination clause in its Ethics Charter in 2016. As a response, Pride House PyeongChang sent an official inquiry about their opinion about Pride House; yet the POC did not clearly answer our inquiry except a short statement that they believe non-discrimination in the Olympic Games. Meanwhile, many LGBTQ athletes participated the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics and to show their prides, many local media released news articles that contains discriminatory attitudes towards sexual minorities. We decided to run a Pride House that 1) promotes visibility of LGBTQ athletes, 2) monitors media releases so as to minimize discriminatory news coverages, and 3) make the Olympic Games more equal, inclusive and enjoyable to everyone.

2018 Pride House PyeongChang : Space
5/17 2018 Pride House PyeongChang : Space KSCRC had discussed long whether it would be efficient and feasible to create a physical space for the Pride House. We decided to hold Pride House PyeongChang mainly via online platforms and other associated events rather than offering a physical space due to financial issues. However, Pride House PyeongChang was offered to share a space within the Canada Olympic House during the Olympic Games from the Canada Olympic Committee, so that we could run exhibitions, receptions and have interviews.

17/17 Review and Prospects Pride House PyeongChang had meaningful achievements in raising issues of LGBTQ rights and sports in South Korea. However, it was unfortunate for us being unable to continue our organizing efforts during the Paralympic Games period. Having this meaningful experience, we believe that we can actively engage in upcoming international mega-sporting events in South Korea.
