Remember King Henry II? His son, King John, was not well- liked by France, Nobles, & The Church Goes to war with France and loses William the Conqueror's land Heavily taxed the nobles Disagreed with the Church on who should take Thomas Becket’s place as Archbishop Gets excommunicated. England is placed under interdiction

4 King John signs the Magna Carta
Fed up by John, barons corner him and force him to sign the Magna Carta (or Great Charter) Ensures nobles have rights Made the monarch obey the law Man is guaranteed due process can’t be imprisoned without legal judgment Habeas corpus can’t be held in prison without being charged a specific crime Can’t raise taxes without approval of the Great Council

6 The Great Council Becomes Parliament
Kings would ask the Great Council for advice on legal matters The Great Council was made of lords and clergy In 1295, King Edward I changed the Great Council to represent more of England Now includes the common man This change made the Great Council become Parliament House of Lords House of Commons Knights represent towns Common people finally have representation
