7 The Middle Ages in Europe, also known as Medieval Europe, lasted from about 500 to 1500 A.D.
Christianity during this time split into two groups, the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church. In 1096 the churches started a series of holy wars to take back holy land from Muslim control in the Crusades.

8 Charlemagne, a leader of Germanic people called the Franks, unified most of Europe from 400 to 800 A.D. After his death in 814, Europe again became divided and a system was created to be a new social structure in Europe which was called the feudal system. Serfs, poor people that worked for lords, were at the bottom of this system.

12 The Renaissance was a period of time between the 1300s and 1500s that sparked a rebirth of art and learning. With the fall of the two Roman Empires, many scholars brought studies of humanism which focused on human values over religious values.

13 A German inventor names Johannes Gutenberg created the printing press in 1450 which led to the creation over many books over a short period of time. The churches began to change with the ideas of Martin Luther becoming outraged with the practice of priests selling indulgences, which was relaxing penalty for sins for money.

14 Luther’s outrage led to a movement to reform, or change Christianity, called the Protestant Reformation. The Catholic Church was outraged and led a series of counter reformations to put emphasis on faith and religious behavior.
