1 Aim: What is Piaget’s Theory of cognitive development?
DO NOW: Describe Piaget’s Theory in 15 Words or Less. Homework: HW DUE: Read text pps. 537 – 541 Complete Piaget Toy HW Assignment & p. 5

2 Describe his theory in 15 words or less!!
Jean Piaget Theory of cognitive development Developing IQ tests and noticed that many children got the same answers wrong. Use Case Studies/ Naturalistic Observations Stage Theory Cognitive Development is our way of adapting to the world Describe his theory in 15 words or less!!

3 What is the acronym to remember the stages? Page 4

4 Criticism of Piaget’s Theory
Questioning whether we progress in an orderly way (debate over continuity vs. discontinuity). Studies reveal there are differences in ages we acquire skills in Piaget’s Theory Children are more capable than what Piaget says. (children are not as egocentric) Studied his own children His theory focuses on thought processes and not feelings

5 We use schema to make sense of the world…
To make sense of the world we develop schemas- a concept or framework that organizes and interprets information.

6 We compare new information to our schema . P. 3
New information can either be… assimilated accommodated Info fits in Change schema

7 Sensory-motor Stage 0 - 2 years
Develop basic schema Learn through our sensory experiences & motor actions Object permanence develops (object exists even when out of sight) Separation anxiety develops Lack symbolic thinking

8 Preoperational Stage 2- 7 years
Symbolic thinking develops Animism Egocentric: has problem seeing things from other’s perspectives) Lacks mental operations to think conservation, reversibility, Classification, etc

9 lack ability with… conservation – understanding that the physical properties of objects can remain the same even if form or appearance changes reverse operations seriation –can think, but can’t reason, use abstract principles or cause and effect classification

10 Concrete Operations(7- 11 years)
Can understand conservation, categorization, other mental operations that allows them to think logically about things but only concrete events ( not abstractly stuck in the here and now) Theory of Mind is developed = not egocentric

11 Formal Operations 11+ Years Adult Reasoning
Use of abstract reasoning Hypothetical thought Metacognition

12 Sensory Motor: Preoperational: Concrete: Formal:
What toys are developmentally appropriate for the following stages? List 1 toy for each stage and explain WHY it is developmentally appropriate for that stage. Include a picture of it. Sensory Motor: Preoperational: Concrete: Formal:

13 How will children at each of the stages view/think of “Santa”? P. 5
Sensory Motor: Preoperational: Concrete: Formal:

14 P. 12 Identify the stage and term.
A child can explain that 3 x 2 represents three sets of two. A child doesn’t sneak a cookie when his mom outside because he thinks that she can see what he sees. A child is asked to add 3 and 2. Using his fingers, he counts and answers “5”. Asked to then add 2 + 3, the child uses his fingers again to get the same answer. A child is given a cardboard box and pretends that it is a train. A child is given a cardboard box and she explores it by opening and closing the flaps.

15 Identify the stage and term.
6. A child proposes that maybe the color that you call “red” is the color that, if he looked with your brain, he would call “yellow”. 7. A child pushes a button on a toy and it makes a sound. He repeats this over and over and over and over…. 8. A child tells his friend, “I’ve got the best joke. What can leap higher than a tall building?” “ Anything, tall buildings can’t leap!”. The child’s understanding of the two interpretations of the question indicate that he has reached this stage. 9. A child uses his understanding of molecular movement to predict how a gas would behave in different conditions.

16 Identify the stage and term.
10 . A mother takes a toy from a child and puts it under a blanket. The child does NOT look for it. 11. Presented with a picture of 4 cats and 6 dogs, a child is asked, which are there more of: cats or animals? The child correctly responds, “animals”. 12. Upon overhearing his mother mention that it is difficult for a woman to “make it to the top of a large corporation”, the child asks why she can’t just take the elevator. 13. Upon seeing his Aunt Sally who lives out-of-town, the child cries. 14. When give one cookie for snack, the child begs for more. Her mother breaks the cookie into two pieces and the child is happy.

18 Diana Baumrind Parenting Styles Article p. 35
What is meant by parent responsiveness? What is meant by parent demandingness? Explain each style in terms of 2/3. What are the consequences of each style?

19

20 Diana Baumrind: Parental Styles
Authoritative Are both demanding and responsive Give firm structure and guidance with controls Listen to child’s opinions but make it clear they make the final decision Authoritarian Permissive Exert too little control Too soft Impose rules and expect obedience Too Hard

23 Identify how a child would explain, think, feel, understand about the book at EACH of the stages?
Sensory Motor: Preoperational: Concrete: Formal:
