1 WHY ENGLISH CAN TAKE YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO!

2 Hi I am Prof. Molly Brown. I’m the Head of the English Department and I look forward to having you as one of our students this year. I hope the following slides will show you why English is a good choice for you and also which English course will be best for you.

3 SOME FUN FACTS There are 335 million people who speak English as a first language and an additional 505 million people worldwide who speak it as a second language. The British Council claims that 25 per cent of the world's population has some understanding of English. In 2014 there were more than 28 million books in print that were written in English. 55% of the internet is in English. The second most popular internet language is Russian at just under 6%. In South Africa the best predictor of university success regardless of field of study is the matric English mark.

4 The UP English Department is ranked among the 200 best English Departments in the world in the QS rankings. We have a lively, supportive postgraduate community and a monthly research seminar. We have the most diverse Honours syllabus in the country We have particular expertise in early modern literature, eighteenth-century literature, Modernism, African literature, children’s literature, creative writing, editing, TESOL and contemporary fantasy and science fiction. Our staff members have degrees from a range of leading universities including Oxford. And a number of our students have gone on to study successfully abroad.

6 SO WHICH ENGLISH COURSE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

7 IN FIRST YEAR WE OFFER THREE COURSES:
ENGLISH 11O This is offered in the first semester in two time slots on the Hatfield Campus and in one on the Groenkloof campus. It introduces literature written before 1900. ENGLISH 120 This is offered in the second semester in two time slots on the Hatfield Campus and in one on the Groenkloof campus. It introduces literature written after 1900. ENGLISH 118 This is offered in two time slots on the Hatfield campus only. It covers the basic rules of English grammar.

8 IF YOU PLAN TO DO ENGLISH IN YOUR SECOND YEAR, THEN YOU MUST TAKE ENG 110 AND ENG 120.
SO THESE COURSES ARE COMPULSORY FOR ANYONE MAJORING IN ENGLISH AS WELL AS FOR PUBLISHING, BA (LAW), BED AND BA (LANGUAGES) STUDENTS WHO ARE TAKING ENGLISH AS ONE OF THEIR TWO MAIN LANGUAGES. YOU CAN CHOOSE TO DO ENGLISH 118 AS WELL AND YOU MUST DO THIS IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE OUR EDITING OR TESOL COURSES IN THIRD YEAR. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR PUBLISHING STUDENTS.

9 IF YOU ARE ONLY PLANNING TO TAKE ENGLISH FOR ONE YEAR, YOU CAN TAKE ENG 110 OR ENG 120 OR ENG 118 OR ANY COMBINATION OF THESE. A LOT OF STUDENTS DO A YEAR OF ENGLISH TO IMPROVE THEIR READING AND WRITING SKILLS AND HELP THEM TO PERFORM BETTER IN ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT PROFESSIONAL FIELDS. English opens the door to multiple careers in growth areas such as teaching; marketing; entertainment; journalism; diplomacy; public relations; politics; advertising; editing; publishing; script writing and game or programme design. It also helps lawyers; social workers; psychologists; diplomats; accountants; engineers and scientists communicate better in their chosen fields.

10 STUDENTS TAKING ENGLISH 110 AND 120 ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND TWO LECTURES AND ONE PRACTICAL PER WEEK. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE ALLOCATED TO A PRACTICAL GROUP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. YOUR LECTURERS WILL GIVE YOUR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS IN FEBRUARY. YOU SHOULD ALSO CNSIDER JOINING THE INKLINGS, OUR DEPARTMENTAL STUDENT SOCIETY. (PSST! THEY HAVE AWESOME PARTIES)

12 IN second YEAR WE OFFER only Two COURSES:
ENGLISH 21O This is offered in the first semester in two time slots: one on the Hatfield Campus and one on the Groenkloof campus. It covers American and Modernist literature and some basic applied language skills. ENGLISH 220 This is offered in the second semester in two time slots: one on the Hatfield Campus and one on the Groenkloof campus. It covers African literature and contemporary world literatures. REMEMBER YOU NEED ENGLISH 110 AND ENGLISH 120 TO GO ON TO SECOND YEAR.

14 IN THIRD YEAR WE OFFER FOUR COURSES:
ENGLISH 31O This is offered in the first semester in ONE time slot on the Hatfield Campus. It covers medieval and early modern literature. ENGLISH 320 This is offered in the second semester in ONE time slot on the Hatfield Campus. It covers eighteenth and nineteenth century literature. THE COURSES ABOVE ARE COMPULSORY FOR ANYONE MAJORING IN ENGLISH. ENGLISH 311 This is offered in the first semester in two time slots on the Hatfield Campus. It covers basic editing skills and techniques. ENGLISH 322 This is offered in the second semester in one time slot on the Hatfield Campus. It covers principles of teaching English to speakers of other languages. THESE TWO COURSES ARE TAKEN BY PUBLISHING AND ENGLISH STUDIES STUDENTS AND AS EXTRAS BY OTHERS WHO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS.
