1 Posting: Pause Before You Post
This is lesson #2: Posting – Pause Before You Post! This Power Point was created by the Center for Cyber Safety and Education. Please do not modify the content. For more information go to

2 All the information you post online stays there FOREVER.
All the information you post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, stays online FOREVER. Even if you delete it. Once you post, it stays online forever. Even if you think you deleted it is still there. What does this mean? That ANYONE could have access to the personal information you post online. Someone could take a screenshot, save it and share it with the rest of the world. That is why it’s important to PAUSE before you POST. Engage the kids, ask them what information should never be posted online.

3 What is Personal Information?
POSTING What is Personal Information? Full Name Age Address Gender Phone Number Plans or Location Passwords What personal information you should NEVER post online? Full Name – First and Last Address – any home, place you go, or school Phone Number or cell number Password – your login and secret codes (You shouldn’t share this with your friends either, only with your parent or guardian). Age – how old you are Gender – are you boy or girl Plans or Location – where you are going to be, who you are going with, when you’re doing something, what you are going to be doing. Why should we keep this private? This information could be seen by ANYONE, they could find where you live and show up uninvited. All this information is PERSONAL and should STAY PRIVATE.

4 SET TO PRIVATE It is okay to post about your interests on social media, but you want to be CAREFUL. Ask the class to raise their hands if their social media accounts are set to private. Many will have it set to public in order to increase their following and “appear” to be more popular/liked. Explain that safety comes before popularity. Suggestion: assign as homework to set their accounts to private with their parents or siblings’ help

5 YOUR TURN! Is it okay to post?
Activity: In the following pictures, ask the class to look closely and determine if the picture reveals any personal information that shouldn’t be posted. Ask the class to raise their hand if they think they’ve spotted why this isn’t okay to post. Answer: While Nermal wants to share his love for pancakes, he is doing it without realizing that behind him there is a picture with his home address.

6 Answer: While Nermal wants to share his awesome grade, he is doing it without realizing that he is revealing his school name. A stranger online could see this picture and show up at the school uninvited. We need to be careful when posting and check what information might accidently be in the photo.

7 Answer: While Nermal wants to share his great selfie, he is doing it without realizing that behind him is his street number and name.
