‘As part of the development of a new Strategic Economic Plan (SEP) for the south east thinkingplace was asked to facilitate workshop sessions with representatives from the LEP area to create a place led vision; gain a better understanding of what is the south east and determine what the role/additionality and the actions of the LEP.’

7. Draft vision statements
SELEP harnesses and develops the special assets of the south east enabling it to be the internationally connected catalyst for and driver of growth, innovation and prosperity for London and UK plc. OR
SELEP will provide leadership in creating an environment for growth that is dynamic, entrepreneurial and innovative, supporting and maximising the relationship with London and Europe to deliver local and national prosperity.

Creative and digital Communities: Develop a creative and digital DNA connecting and energising communities.
Infrastructure: Generate a business infrastructure fit to drive UK plc.

9. London’s seafront of growth
SELEP’s Coastal Commitment
Apply for SELEP Sector Support Funding to develop coastal action plan - Aim to create a coastal action plan firmly linked to the wider economic opportunity of the region AND that takes action to raise the quality of our coastal communities and their tourism offering;
Launch a campaign to change perception of coastal places;
Link larger developments to coastal areas – e.g. Garden Community developments;
In terms of the partnership: Use this to raise awareness of the role and importance of SELEP’s Coastal Communities, its Working Group and promote the wider benefits of our work to the UK coastline and government.
Connect coastal with new and large scale in-land developments:
Maximise on the opportunities that arise from Brexit;
Make sure SELEP continues to take full advantage of a number of big transport set pieces.
Identify a large scale digital project; no one gets left behind
Work with garden settlements as test-bed for helping to reduce the gap.

11. CCWG notes and actions:
The group received an update on the SEP progress and slide 10 in this pack covers some of the coastal actions captured at the recent SEP writing sessions.
The group received an update on the Coastal Communities Fund, Round 5 from MHCLG; coastal representatives shared updates on their local applications.
First stage deadline is the 30th April, Stage 2 likely to be June/July and awards announced at the end of the year.
There is a soon to be launched Coastal Revival Fund (CRF), further details to follow. Georgina Button will share once informed, likely to be later in the summer. This fund also likely to be similar to previous CRF with awards at the lower value of 50k and aimed at improving underutilised heritage assets.
Alan Denby, Torbay Development Agency (TDA), presented plans for a Coastal Productivity Commission. He presented Torbay’s unique economic challenges in comparison to most of its neighbouring Devon towns.
Alan invited further discussion with SELEP to pursue the development of a Coastal Productivity Commission.
It was recognised that businesses who manufacture small components at high value and who are technology driven benefit from operating out of coastal places.
An example given was Torbay’s Electronics & Photonics Innovation Centre; and Hastings as one of the UK’s main clusters of ultra-high vacuum, photonics and optics companies.
The SELEP Sector Support Funding was discussed and 3 CCWG members volunteered to fulfil the
SSF application which will set out the requirement for a Coastal Action Plan or possibly a
contribution to the Coastal Productivity Commission led by TDA.

12. Actions
Action: CCWG members attending Coastal Challenge Summit on the 24th April.
Chris Burr, Southend on Sea Borough Council presenting on behalf of SELEP and the CCWG as a showcase item of the event programme. General feedback from attendees to be given at the next CCWG.
Action: Coastal representatives to link CCF Round 5 applications to their Coastal Community Teams (CCT) where possible. Clearly this is only applicable to those who have a CCT in place.
Action: Sector Support Funding application meeting between Tom Gardiner, Graham Burgess and Simon Hubbard. This group will further discuss the Coastal Productivity Commission with Alan Denby, TDA. To present back at
the next CCWG.
Action: Coastal Revival Fund, MHCLG to share information once available. Georgina Button, SELEP, to distribute.
