8 Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Infections

9 MYTHS OF STDs True or False
Most people with an STD experience painful symptoms. Birth control pills prevent the spread of STDs. Douching will cure and STD. Abstinence is the best way to prevent STDs. If you get an STD once, and are treated, you can’t get it again. A person does not need to see a doctor if she/he notices scores on his/her genitals once, but then they go away. Condoms help prevent the spread of STDs

10 STDs/STIs STDs/STIs are diseases and infections which are capable of being spread from person to person through: sexual intercourse oral-genital contact or in non-sexual ways. IV drug

11 Fun Facts About 9.5 million adolescents and young adults (15-24) are diagnosed with STDs each year! Many STDs have no signs or symptoms. GET TESTED! Separate tests are needed to detect most types of STDs. Some can be treated by antibiotics others are not treatable Left untreated, some STDs can lead to infertility, pregnancy complications, organ damage, and even death.

12 Chlamydia Four million new cases occur each year! Symptoms Females:
Abdominal pain Bleeding between menstrual periods White or grey vaginal discharge Males: Discharge from penis Burning/itching around the opening of the penis Pain and swelling in testicals

13 Chlamydia Treatment: Can be cured with antibiotics!

14 Gonorrhea Can be spread from close sexual intercourse
Can be spread from mother to child during birth Can spread to other body parts!

15 Gonorrhea Each year 650,00 people in the US are infected Symptoms
5 – 7 days or up to 30 days Sore or red throat Blood and pus in bowel movements Treatment Strict pill regimen until all symptoms are gone

16 Gonorrhea

17 Herpes Symptoms usually show 2-20 days after contact.
“Outbreaks” of blisters and ulcers. Stress, bruising, chaffing, or a woman’s period may cause an onset of the disease. Symptoms Females Blisters in or around the vagina, fever and headaches. Males: Small sore or cluster of blisters on the penis.

18 Herpes May be extremely painful or very mild.
Once infected with HSV, people remain infected for life. Treatment Pills or IV

19 HPV Human Papilloma Virus Most common STD!
79 million Americans are currently infected 14 million people become newly infected each year. In most cases, HPV goes away on its own and does not cause any health problems. If it does not go away, it can cause health problems like genital warts and cancer.

20 HPV You also can develop symptoms years after you have sex with someone who is infected making it hard to know when you first became infected. Vaccines are available to help protect against getting some strains of HPV. Treatment: Not for virus but for other health issues it can cause

21 Activity DO: DO NOT: Grab a pair of gloves Grab ONE of the cups
Grab one of the index cards DO NOT: DRINK OR SPILL THE CUPS! THERE MAY BE CHEMICALS IN YOUR CUP!

22 Activity continued There are 2 people currently “infected” with an STD but are unaware they have it. You are to “swap fluids” with a total of 3 people In order to swap fluids with someone, you must use a cheesy (but APPROPRIATE) pick up line! Write down the numbers of the people you swapped with! You will need this to help you figure out who the original people were!
