Innovating for Improvement NHS Education for Scotland Always Event Project 19 May 2016

2 Congratulations!! Now you heard about us , want to talk about you and this programme! Congratulations on being our award holders for Shine. We were overwhelmed by the interest we had in the scheme, it really struck a chord with healthcare teams.  We received over 900 expressions of interest , 330 applications and we selected 23 projects for this round Having worked in the NHS for 30 years and more recently experienced it from the other side (!), I do appreciate how busy and challenging times are in the health service at the moment. For you to have had the inspiration and new ideas in the first place and apply for an award then follow these up with the motivation and energy to put these into practice is impressive. Well done, we do hope this programme will provide you with the resources, support and time to succeed and that your ideas will SHINE!!

3 The Health Foundation An independent charity working to continuously improve the quality of healthcare in UK Want highest possible quality health care – safe, effective, person-centred, timely, efficient & equitable We aim to inspire & create space for people, teams, organisations & systems to make lasting improvements So I want to begin by giving you a brief introduction to the THF, our current priorities and where your projects and this programme fit Who are we and what do we do? …..

4 Current priorities 1. Inspire improvements in the quality of healthcare delivery   build & promote evidence (methods, interventions & context) conduit for international innovation in healthcare delivery support improvement work (project, organisation, community levels) producing generalisable learning & insight into approaches and implementation develop individuals to model QI leadership through fellowship programmes support individuals to connect and network - work collectively to bring about improvements Quality improvement is a broad area and to be effective in such changing times in the health service THF needs to focus on some key activities and do these well. To ensure we don’t spread our resources too thinly we have recently reviewed our strategy/ plan and agreed a set of key priorities……. PS Details & resources on our web site

6 How the Health Foundation works
Funding Resources Support and feedback Dissemination – direct and indirect Themed events Networks & contacts Further opportunities Secondly, here’s the key to the success of the programme  The health foundation isn’t just funding these awards because you are great people with great ideas (although that is a pretty good reason).  The reason we are funding them is that we want these projects to generate wider learning for the healthcare system.  Specifically we want your projects to help us build knowledge and new approaches in the following 3 areas: (Patients 14; safety 7; safety / costs 3; costs 6)

7 Role of support provider
Healthcare Improvement consultancy arm of the Trust Richard Edgeworth, Healthcare Consultant – Support Consultant for the project Secondly, here’s the key to the success of the programme  The health foundation isn’t just funding these awards because you are great people with great ideas (although that is a pretty good reason).  The reason we are funding them is that we want these projects to generate wider learning for the healthcare system.  Specifically we want your projects to help us build knowledge and new approaches in the following 3 areas: (Patients 14; safety 7; safety / costs 3; costs 6)

8 What do you need to do? Project manage Self-evaluate progress
Measure impact Capture learning So – no pressure then!.... And this leads me to my final message: what we need you to do. We need you to implement and test your ideas in a rigorous way that collects the information we need to show the impact of your ideas on both the quality of healthcare and on the costs of healthcare.  We need rigorous measurement, from the start.  And we need you to be capturing what you learn about the approach you are taking so this can be shared with others who might want to replicate your work. Previous award holders identified need to involve stakeholders early and plan for long term ie developing business cases For the 23 teams with full programme support, you have already met your Support Consultant from Springfield Consultancy. They will work with you to challenge you throughout the project, they will act as your critical friend and provide support advice and evidence, research and documentation. We have learnt a lot from the first 2 cohorts of projects and we hope that we will learn from you to make the next rounds even better.

9 Key messages Congratulations! Remember your projects are being funded to generate learning for the wider healthcare system Measurement is key Work with stakeholders - think longer term Tell us what is working, what isn’t and why! Congratulations! Remember that that your projects are a vehicle for delivering some significant learning for the wider healthcare system Begin working with all stakeholders and To realise this we need you to take rigorous approaches to measurement and learning Enjoy the rest of the day and please let us know how we can help you succeed in your task.
