A collective noun is singular when it refers to the group as a whole unit So, it will take a singular verb Ex: The family has decided to move. [the family as a whole is moving] A collective noun is plural when it refers to the individual parts or members of a group So, it will take a plural verb Ex: The family have not agreed on a new house.
