6 Key IT Challenges Challenges with delivering sustainable business value
Too much time and money is required to efficiently develop, deploy and maintain custom applications. Identifying the right application is costly. Maintaining applications from multiple vendors is cumbersome. Deliver and Demonstrate Business Value The pressures to achieve profitable growth has introduced a new mandate, the need to innovate Beyond product or service innovation, more CEOs are looking to business process innovation as a key competitive advantage. Innovation is driven through collaboration to solicit ideas (internal and external) The flexibility to rapidly implement innovation is the key enabler Limited budget and resources Too many issues with buying and building apps Not equipped to rapidly respond to business change Difficult to deliver business ROI and differentiators

7 it’s currently under way
The Shift Toward Application Platforms Many organisations are embracing application platforms Don’t know 0.5% Organisations are converging what were once disparate, standalone applications and systems into an integrated, unified application platform. Approximately 75 percent of IT leaders across 412 companies in North America, Europe, Asia- Pacific, and Latin America anticipate a shift towards a buy and build approach Yes, it’s currently under way 41% but no plan is in place 35% No 24% Objective: Provide 3rd party evidence of the shift towards application platforms. Microsoft commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a study of 412 IT decision-makers in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America to examine how customers buy application platforms using Microsoft’s Application Platform Optimization model. The study looked at the six major categories of platform software: application servers, portal servers, data infrastructure, service oriented architecture (SOA) and business process management (BPM), application development tools, and business intelligence. Platform Convergence And Consolidation With about 75% of respondents answering yes to the question, “Do you anticipate a convergence of these application infrastructure capabilities including business intelligence, application servers, development tools, portals, integration, SOA, and BPM to occur within your organization?” the study findings suggest that the trend is toward convergence of application platform software. Forrester Research 2010 “Many Organizations Embrace Converged Application Platforms, But Adoption Barriers Remain”, a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting
