1 Articulation Overview
Lori Suekawa Articulation Officer SSC 108K, X3517

2 Question One: What is Articulation?
The process of developing a formal, written agreement that identifies courses taken at El Camino College are comparable to, or acceptable in lieu of courses at the receiving campus. It may not be an “EXACT” equivalent UC - they deem a course comparable if 75-80% is similar and specific content addressed.

3 Articulated versus Transferable
Transferable- a course offered at El Camino College that is accepted at another institution for transfer/elective credit. Articulated- a course that has been determined as comparable in content to a course at another institution.

4 Types of Articulation General education (IGETC, CSU Breadth)
Lower division major preparation Course to Course (course articulated for a specific department) CSU/UC transferable (CSU Bacc list, TCA)

5 Question Two How do we determine what courses are transferable to the UC and CSU systems?

6 UC Transferable Agreement TCA
Courses are submitted to the University Office of the President (UCOP) Courses that are considered UC transferable should have a comparable course taught at the lower division level (usually numbered 1-99) at a UC campus Check the university’s catalog for course descriptions

7

8 CSU Transferable Courses (Bacc List)
Executive Order 167 Guidelines: a) remedial coursework not considered; b) coursework with the primary emphasis on theory and concepts

9 CSU EO 167

10 Question Three What do curriculum committees need to know about the cycle for articulation submissions and decisions?

11 Time line for UC Transfer, IGETC, CSU GE Breadth
Document Submittal Month Notification Effective Year Submit courses for CSU GE Mid-December April Current academic year Submit courses for IGETC Current academic year Submit courses for UC TCA June-September ECC(August) October

12 Question Four What are the top reasons courses are denied or cause articulation problems?

13 Answer: Outline is too old (5 years)
Textbooks are too old (standard discipline may not be enough) Content- missing specific topics Description, content, and objectives not aligned Not comparable…. University not accepting articulation for a course

16 What is C-ID? C-ID = Course Identification Numbering System
Remember CAN, LDTP, TCSU Began in 2009 (mandated in 2013 with ADT) Supra Numbering System Articulated to course descriptors Currently 364 descriptors (140 are agriculture/animal science type courses)

23 Top Challenges for CCC Not 100% compliant with course descriptor content Textbooks out of date May not have the 100% compliance with prerequisites Losing articulation with UC’s if content changes too much **Units for courses are too high/too low for the major; can’t meet the unit requirement for TMC

24 What Can We do at ECC? Faculty respond to descriptors and provide input to the C-ID faculty discipline groups Content review Update books, unless truly a discipline standard If denied, provide rationale for an appeal or make changes when possible Please communicate with curriculum advisor and articulation officer with questions

25 Pros/Cons Pros: Improvement in some outlines, content more clear and specific Updated texts Everyone held to same criteria Descriptor reviewed every 5 years Cons: Responses delayed In some cases, an enforced prerequisite Inconsistent reviews

26 Important Reminders! Use www.assist.org
A course which is transferable isn’t necessarily articulated for major or GE Outlines: Less is not more…. It is better to be more detailed than not have the details Ask me….X3517

27 Role of the Articulation Officer (AO)
Manage, update, and disseminate current articulation data. Initiate articulation agreements with four year institutions. Serve as a resource for faculty as appropriate.
