2 If someone told you it would only take 30 seconds to save someone’s life, would you do it?
That’s how long it takes to join the Indiana Donor Registry

3 Today you’ll learn about the steps to take in making your decision about registering as a donor:
Important information for you to think about and share with your family The different ways to register your donation decision in Indiana The importance of talking to your family about donation and knowing each family member’s personal decision

4 Indiana Donor Network:
is the link between patients waiting for a transplant, potential donors and their families is a not-for-profit organization and one of 58 organ procurement organizations that make up the nation’s donation network provides community education to prepare families BEFORE they are touched personally by donation and transplantation works with Indiana hospitals and transplant centers to provide hope and healing for families through donation and transplantation provides an aftercare program for donor families, and facilitates anonymous communication between donor families and transplant recipients

5 Introduce Indiana’s three transplant programs and types of transplants they provide
Explain that IU Health includes IU, Methodist and Riley Hospital for Children All patients waiting for an organ transplant are in a national database maintained by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS)

6 This video provides a great five minute overview of the donation and transplantation process

7 Today there are more than 118,000 people in the U. S
Today there are more than 118,000 people in the U.S. waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant That’s enough people to fill Lucas Oil Stadium TWO TIMES! That number of patients waiting includes about 1,400 Hoosiers

8 Every 10 minutes, someone is added to the national organ transplant waiting list
Think about how many new people will be added just during the time we’re in this class!

9 Sadly, each day an average of 22 people die because a donated organ was not available in time
That includes 18 people who are on the national transplant waiting list It also includes 4 more people who became so sick that transplant was no longer an option for them - and they had to be removed from the waiting list

10 Here are some more positive statistics!
Last year, donor heroes provided hope and healing for millions of people!

11 Discuss organs that can be donated and transplanted
One organ donor can save 8 lives (heart, two lungs, liver, two kidneys, pancreas, intestine) Only a small percentage of people who die are able to donate their organs (people who die in a hospital as a result of brain death) To show what it’s like to wait for a lung transplant, include “Every Breathe I Take” classroom activity here (See Classroom Activities in our Teacher Resources section on IndianaDonorNetwork.org)

12 Discuss tissues that can be donated and transplanted
Many people are able to be tissue donors One tissue donor can help many people To show what it’s like to suffer from corneal blindness, include “I Can See Clearly Now” classroom activity here (see Classroom Activities in our Teacher Resources section on IndianaDonorNetwork.org)

13 Recipient families have the opportunity to spend more time with their loved one and make more memories together Donor families share that they find some peace and comfort in knowing that their loved one is a hero who continues to make a difference in the lives of others Link to video story will work in slideshow mode Story of Hope

14 A thorough examination, many tests and a medical history are completed
Physicians will determine and let the family know what can be donated to help others Everyone who wants to help others through donation should continue to be a registered donor

15 An individual’s donation status does not affect their medical care
Donation does not become an option until all lifesaving efforts have failed and death has been declared

16 Expenses related to donation are paid by the organ and tissue recovery agencies

17 Donation does not affect funeral plans
An open casket funeral is still possible

18 Donation is viewed as a final act of love and generosity
Consult your religious leader if you have any questions or concerns

19 Living donations include a kidney or part of the liver, lung, intestine or pancreas
Don’t forget about blood donation and registering as a possible bone marrow donor

20

21 At the Indiana BMV, teenagers getting a state ID card, learner’s permit or driver’s license will be asked if they want to join the state donor registry If your parent or guardian agrees, you can join the registry and have the red donor heart on your ID, permit or license Until you reach the age of 18, permission from your parent or guardian would still be needed for donation takes place

22

23 Interested students can get assistance from Indiana Donor Network to organize and host a lunch time donor information and registration display Students can organize and staff a display at a school sporting event or other community event Follow Indiana Donor Network on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat (Share information and personal stories with your friends and followers) Choose donation and transplantation as your topic for a speech or paper (Indiana Donor Network can suggest sources with accurate and current information)
