-What is the history of voting rights in America? -Who can, can’t and doesn’t vote? -What are the factors that influence how one votes?

5 What are the basic qualifications for voting?
Citizenship Age Residence Registration *Literacy tests and poll taxes illegal! *Mentally ill and convicted felons can have vote taken away

6 What are the reasons people choose to NOT vote?
Political efficacy The belief that politics is efficient, and so your vote matters – thus, you are more likely to participate politically. Ballot fatigue Off-year elections Voting procedures “Cannot-voters” vs. “do not-voters”

7 What sociological factors influence voter behavior?
Income/Occupation Education Gender Age Religion Race Geography Family and other groups

8 What psychological factors influence voter behavior??
Party identification Straight-ticket vs. split-ticket voting Independents Candidates and issues

9 Create a Party! You will make groups of 4, with people who share similar political views with you (use your isidewith.com results). Start by making a list of the following in each of your notebooks on a left-side page: political issues 2. Your policy on each of those issues 3. A party name 4. A party symbol 5. A candidate for President (one of you guys ; )

10 Create a Party! You might want to bring to class tomorrow: Pictures
When you are done with those five things, create a party platform to present to the class. These projects will be finished on Friday and presented on Monday March 5th (see handout). You might want to bring to class tomorrow: Pictures Coloring materials A picture of your candidate

11 Monday ; ) 1) You will have max of 15 minutes to “bring it together”
2) Facebook Profile & Tweets must be printed 3) FB/Tweets & Tri-Fold will be turned in to me as you come up to give the speech 4) The Presidential Candidate should be the one writing the speech but doesn’t have to be 5) Have another team-member come and hold your poster up as you give the speech 6) The voters will be allowed to ask a total of 2 questions per candidate 7) VOTE ; )
