Warmup: Explain the features of this piecewise function

M3U1D2 Bike Lovers Objective:
Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements that use function notation in terms of a context. Question: How can f(x) be equal to four different expressions and still represent only one function?

Page 5 Read questions 1-6 aloud. Then rotate partners. Ask students to explore and complete p.5 #1-6 and be prepared to share their findings at the board.

The focus for the second situation (questions 7-12) is to solidify the connections between domain,
function, and graph. Select a student to graph Rashid’s bike ride (and answer questions 7 and 12), then choose another student to explain their answers to questions 8 and 9, another student to answer questions 10 and 11.
9
Which form of a linear equation (slope-intercept, standard, or point-slope) is most useful in writing piecewise-defined functions? Why? Challenge: Create a continuous piecewise-defined function using at least two different function types (linear, exponential, or quadratic). Explain your method for making sure the function stays continuous throughout the domain. What do you have to pay attention to while creating your function Discuss
