Phylum Porifera Sponges The First Animals
2
Sponges are animals and belong to the Animal Kingdom. Characteristics:
1. Multicellular 2. No organs or body systems 3 . Cellular digestion – no mouth, no stomach, no anus (heterotrophic) 4. Asymmetry
3
Sponges are SESSILE – they do not move
They obtain food by FILTER FEEDING
4
They reproduce sexually (with sperm and eggs) in the water (external fertilization)
They can also reproduce asexually (regeneration)
6
Collar Cells – flagellated cells in the sponge that move water, food, and nutrients and take away waste.
7
Sponges have no nervous system – they cannot respond to environment and cannot feel.

Phylum Cnidaria Jellyfish Song
9
Cnidarians - jellyfish, coral, hydra, sea anemone
*Named for the stinging cells or cnidoblasts that cover their tentacles, which contain stinging threads called nematocysts.
10
Characteristics of Cnidarians:
Radial Symmetry Mouth Nerve Net Gastrovascular cavity Tentacles with Cnidoblasts (stinging cells)
11
Most Cnidarians have radial symmetry
12
Nematocysts (barbs)
13
Gastrovascular cavity (digestion)
14
Cnidarians have two body forms: polyp (vase shaped) medusa (cup shaped)
15
Portuguese Man of War is not a Jellyfish it is a cnidarian that floats in the water and has long tentacles Portuguese Man of War Video
16
The Hydra is a freshwater cnidarian.
What kind of symmetry does hydra have? Is it a medusa or a polyp?

Coral Reefs are made from the skeletons of cnidarians
