Federation University Australia (FedUni) is one of the nations’s leading regional universities. With a reputation for relevance and excellence, FedUni has a strong tradition of education and training delivery spanning more than 145 years. FedUni was Australia’s first regional, multi-sector university and its School of Mines campus in Ballarat, Victoria, is the third oldest site of higher learning in Australia. It offers a full range of degrees, including Masters and PhD in Higher Degree Research (HDR) programs.

3 The Alfredo Pires Scholarship
The scholarship offers to a Timor-Leste citizen a full-time research Masters and/or PhD scholarship in Geology at Federation University. The scholarship consists of: Enrolment and tuition fees; A stipend of AUS$26,682 per year (indexed by the Consumer Price Index, CPI); Overseas health cover; Relocation allowance of up to $2,000. As the Timor-Leste educational partner to FedUni, assessment, shortlisting and final ranking of the applicants will be conducted jointly by FedUni and UNTL.

4 Application Process Deadline: 25 August 2017
Applicants need to have an educational background and some research experience in one or more of the following disciplines: geology, geography, biology, physics, chemistry, mining engineering.

5 Application Process // Documents
Applicants must submit to the Office of the Deputy Rector for Cooperation Affairs of UNTL by only // the following documents: Curriculum Vitae (including all academic qualifications; list of prior research outputs; and their IELTS results, if they already have an IELTS score); Copy of the passport or of other identity document; Copy of all relevant higher education Diplomas and Transcripts of Records; Copy of the IELTS results (if they have undertaken an IELTS test).

Applicants need to select one of the following research proposals as their choice of research project. In no more than one page, they should provide a statement about why they have chosen this project and how their background is relevant to the topic.

1. Field of specialisation: Palaeoecology and Palaeoclimatology Working title: Changes in hydrology and climate during the Mid-Pliocene Warm Period from sedimentary records of South Australia (Supervisors: Stephen Carey and Jessica Reeves) 2. Field of specialisation: Hydrogeology Working title: Groundwater systems of Timor-Leste (Supervisor: Peter Dahlhaus) 3. Field of specialisation: Geohazards Working title: Geohazards of Timor-Leste (Supervisor: Peter Dahlhaus) 4. Field of specialisation: Environmental Geology Working title: Maintaining environmental quality at times of rapid development: A case history from Timor-Leste (Supervisor: Kim Dowling)

8 Selection Process A panel will be set up to assess the applications and rank the four most appropriate applicants for the scholarship based on their previous academic record and level of English proficiency, in the context of the research proposal chosen. The shortlisting panel will consist of both FedUni and UNTL representatives. The top four applicants, as assessed by the panel, will be required to complete and submit the application form to Research Services at FedUni. If any of the top four applicants do not have an IELTS result, then FedUni will pay for one only IELTS preparation course and one test prior to the next step in the process.

9 Selection Process The top four applications will then undergo the usual FedUni and Faculty of Science and Technology processes for assessment and final ranking of scholarship and entry into the Masters and/or PhD program in the field of Geology. The top ranked applicant will gain the scholarship. There is provision for excellent Masters students to seek conversion to the PhD program after one year full-time in the Masters program.

10 Selection Process The top ranked applicant who meets all other entry requirements and is assessed as being suitable for the scholarship but does not meet English language requirements may be offered a place in an English Academic Program at FedUni. This applicant must not have received an IELTS score with any band less than 5.5 to be eligible for this program. Fees associated with undertaking the English Academic Program will be paid for by FedUni, and the scholarship payments will commence upon arrival for the English Academic Program.
