The Guide Chapter 7 Part 2 Jessica Ma, Meryl Seah, Geetika Mukkamala
2
Dominant Effect Narayan uses Rosie’s arrival at Raju’s house to contrast the characters of Raju’s mother and Rosie, critiquing the archaic misogynistic view of women.
3
Rationale We chose to use Facebook for Raju’s mom to represent the archaic views about women she has because it is an older form of social media. Snapchat represents Rosie’s new, modern view of women’s role in society, to be independent, because it is a modern form of social media.
4
Rosie When Rosie shows up at Raju’s house, Raju welcomes her and offers her shelter. Rosie snaps a picture with a celebration emoji to show that she finally found a place to stay. Raju’s mom initially treated Rosie very kindly, calling her a “brave girl” with a voice “full of admiration for her” (111). She offers Rosie coffee, which Rosie gratefully accepts.
5
Rosie “Your mother gave me coffee; that is enough. What a fine mother you have” (113) Rosie is taken by surprise by how nicely Raju’s mother is treating her, considering she knows nothing about Rosie. The angel emoji represents how Rosie sees Raju’s mom in the beginning of the second part of Chapter 7.
6
Rosie “Encouraged by me [Raju], Rosie had begun to practice. She got up at five in the morning, bathed, and prayed before the picture of a god in my mother's niche” (120) Oblivious of the opinions of the community about her, Rosie concentrates her time on dancing in order to become a great dancer like she always wanted.
7
Rosie “The house rang with the jingling of her anklets.” (120)
Depicts Rosie’s dedication towards dance. The exclamation mark represents her excitement in doing something she loves, and the dancer emoji shows what she was about to do.
8
Rosie: Snaps “She ignored her surroundings completely, her attention being concentrated upon her movements and steps” (120) The purple sparkling background resembles one of those inspirational quote backgrounds on the internet. By putting inspirational messages on her snap story, Rosie empowers herself as well as others to pursue what they want, depicting her as an independent woman.
9
Rosie: Snaps Rosie is finally getting used to life at Raju’s house with dancing in her life. The ambient filter on the left shows her attention to aesthetically pleasing things. The snapchat on the right again has a purple background, recreating one of those inspirational post type snapchats. The emojis show that Rosie is enjoying her life with Raju and pursuing dance.
10
Raju’s Mom: Posts “Good, good, brave girl. Then you lack nothing in the world. You are not like us uneducated women. You will get on anywhere. You can ask for your railway ticket, call a policeman if somebody worries you, and keep our money. What are you going to do? Are you going to join the government service and earn? Brave girl” (111). Raju’s mother first likes Rosie after learning that she is educated and thinking that she is unmarried.
11
“I was hoping you would have the sense to do something about it
“I was hoping you would have the sense to do something about it. It can’t go on like this forever. What will people say?” (120). Raju’s mother is worried about her and her son’s reputation as they continue to let a dancer live with them. As she criticizes Rosie, more people like her posts and Raju stops liking them.
12
“She had been listening to gossip, and she could not accommodate the idea of living with a tainted woman” (121). Raju’s mother hears of Rosie’s marriage, and wishes that she leaves to reunite with her husband. More people continue to like her posts, showing their agreement.
13
“She is a real snake woman, I tell you
“She is a real snake woman, I tell you. I never liked her from the first day you mentioned her” (121). Raju’s mother claims to dislike Rosie and sees her as a snake woman. As she follows the opinions of the villagers, she frustrates Raju as he struggles to defend Rosie.
14
“It’s not he who has ruined you, but the saithan inside, which makes you talk like this” (122). Raju’s mother agrees with fellow villagers who claim that Rosie is a saithan who is ruining Raju’s career and life, taking a dramatic shift from her initial admiration of Rosie and demonstrating the effect of society of the view and treatment of women.
15
