FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

Ovary (ovaries-pl.) The female sex glands that store the ova and produce female sex hormones.

Ova The female reproductive cells. Singular form is ovum.
Females are born with all their eggs, by the time we reach reproductive age we have approximately 40,000.

Fallopian Tubes A pair of tubes with fingerlike projections that draw in the ovum. Conception most often occurs in the tubes.

Uterus A hollow, muscular, pear-shaped organ inside a female’s body. Where the baby grows.

Endometrium The uterine lining. Made up of blood and nutrient-rich tissue. Shed each month during menstrual cycle.

Cervix The opening to the uterus. This expands during childbirth to allow the baby to pass through the birth canal. Expands from 0-10 centimeters. Expansion is what causes labor pains.

Vagina A muscular, elastic passageway that extends from the uterus to the outside of the body. Referred to as the birth canal during labor and birth.

Urethra The tube that leads from the bladder to the outside of the body, where urine is expelled from.

Clitoris A sensitive external organ of the reproductive system in females that is capable of becoming erect. It is located above or in front of the urethra.

Hymen Thin membrane across the vaginal opening.
Ruptured during first time having sexual intercourse.

Ovulation The process of releasing a mature ovum into the fallopian tube each month. Alternates from side to side. Sometimes experience cramps similar to menstrual cramps.

Menstruation A monthly shedding of the uterine lining. Occurs as a way of expelling unfertilized egg (ovum). 28 day cycle. Cause of P.M.S.

P.M.S. (pre-menstrual syndrome)
Physical and emotional changes, including depression, irritability, appetite changes, bloating, water retention, and breast soreness. One or more of which may be experienced in the several days before the onset of menstrual flow.

Infertility A disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Can be caused by ovulation disorders, damage to fallopian tubes, endometriosis, uterine or cervical causes, or eggs of poor quality.
