1 Energy Adds Up Starter: Unscramble the different types of energy
23/2/15 LO: -Describe energy before and after a change - Explain what brings changes in energy Starter: Unscramble the different types of energy Ext: What type of energy does each light bulb represent MEDIUM ntgeaMic miChecla niKtcei HARD EASY hlitg undso hetrlma citsale rvantioGtala henaMcilac

2 Starter: Unscramble the different types of energy
Energy Adds Up 23/2/15 Starter: Unscramble the different types of energy GRAVITATIONAL MECHANICAL LIGHT SOUND THERMAL ELASTIC MAGNETIC CHEMICAL KINETIC It is important everyone has these examples written down they will need them for later Use the time people are copying to talk through some of the harder ones

3 10/11/2018 LO: How do we describe the transfer of energy? All Most Some Be able to explain what brings about changes in energy Be able to describe energy before and after a change Be able to state the law of conservation of energy Coffee creamer demo (again) – what is happening? What can you see? Energy transfer practical circus (talk to techs – what is available?) WKSHEET 1 – Energy transfers practical sheet Keywords: Law of conservation of energy, chemical store, energy store, thermal, kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic, dissipated

4 Different types of energy
Kinetic (movement) Thermal (heat) Light Gravitational Chemical Sound Elastic Electrical Nuclear Kids hate learning GCSE energy names. In your books can you give an example of each type of energy – use the pictures to help Jump by Hamad AL-Mohanna (photographyblogger.net) Pictures only given for gravitational and elastic.

5 The nature of energy

6 Energy stores When energy is not being used we say that it is in a store. Gas is a chemical store of energy. When it is burned it transfers heat energy to hot objects, which become a thermal store.

7 Energy stores Energy is _______ from one ____ ____ to another. It ________ created or destroyed. This is the law of the ________ __ ________. Burning a fuel is an example of a change. Energy is _______ from a chemical store of the fuel to a thermal store. At the end of this change, there is ______ energy in the thermal store and ______ energy in the chemical store. The total amount of energy is _______. Conservation of energy, more, the same, transferred, energy store, is not, less.

8 Conservation of Energy
Describe what is happening to the stored energy in the food when it is burned. Use the word bank. energy, stored, heat, chemical energy, food, sound, transferred, light, burned

9 Conservation of Energy
Energy does not just disappear. You cannot end up with more energy than you had at the start. The energy was stored in the food, when it was burned it was than transformed into different types of energy.

10 Input 1 It is never destroyed or used up. It is only transferred into another form. We call this the “The law of the Conservation of Energy”

11 Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred. This is the law of conservation of energy.

12 Conservation of Energy
Input 1 Total Energy Before Total Energy After =

13 Practical Around the room are a series of practical activities.
Identify the energy store Describe the set up Identify the store the energy has transferred into Record careful observations, you’ll need them to answer the questions pull-back toy car or series circuit with a motor attached to a small mass by thread  pendulum on a clamp stand  battery-operated fan  toy car and ramp  tea light or candle  ice cube melting in a beaker of water  mass suspended on a spring  balloon rocket car  Newton’s cradle  falling mass pulling a trolley along a bench  Bunsen burner  spring-loaded toy

14 Discussion Which energy stores were in each experiment? What happened to the energy in each case? Can you explain the difference between an energy store and an energy transfer? Discuss dissipation and wasted energy here – allow more able students to discuss this in their answers to the questions.

15 Plenary Store or Transfer?
Energy Store Energy Transfer Hot drink, battery in a torch, inflated balloon, music from a radio, candle flame, candle, current in a torch circuit, pop from a burst balloon, petrol in a car EXTENSION: can you name the store?

16 Current in a torch circuit
Store or Transfer?
