5 PRASA’s Modernization Programme
Addressing the challenges through modernization Rail commuter service in SA needs a complete overhaul to ensure efficient and enjoyable passenger experience PRASA has initiated a Programme to transform and modernise passenger railways in South Africa. PRASA is looking to invest approximately R172bn over 10 years (from 2013/14). The investment outlook by PRASA encompasses: Acquisition of new rolling stock Station improvements Network improvement Signalling system upgrades Communication and marketing Renewal of Metrorail brand Modernization New Fleet Rail Infrastructure Depot Modernization Technology Improvements Station Upgrades

8 Manufacture is on track
Manufacture of the first set of trains is on track First Test Train and Second Test Train are at Wolmerton Depot and currently undergoing testing. The 1st Operational Train is expected to arrive for testing at Wolmerton Depot by the end of March 2016 and is targeted for commercial operation in October 2016 59 car-body shells (9.8 train sets) manufactured 30 cars (5 train sets) are on the fitting line 30 cars (5 trains) have completed handover phase to testing.

Project Description 135 planned modernization as part of changing commuter experience and commercialization. Location Mabopane – Pretoria- Germiston – JHB – Naledi. Umlazi – Durban – Kwa Mashu – Bridge City. Khayelitsha / Kapteinsklip – Cape Town. Progress Benefits/Impact 3 stations are in construction: Philippi station (WC) - 76% Complete Duffs Roads Station (KZN) – 89% Complete Oakmoor Station (GP) – 35% Complete 12 prioritised projects in detailed design. 25 Park Station Project Description
Johannesburg Park Station is in the South Gauteng Region and involves the planning, alterations, repairs and renovations of services, internal and external infrastructure in the Johannesburg Park Station Precinct. Estimated Capital Costs R 1.3 billion for 2016 MTEF with R 426 million allocated for FY2016/17 Timeframes To be completed by March 2018 Progress Benefits/Impact Two (2) projects are currently in Construction (Concourse tiling & Bus Ticketing) which are to be completed by 16 November 2015 Three projects have been completed (Brazen Head, Concourse tiling and Car Rental) Two (2) projects are at Corporate BSC for Construction tender approval (Solar Energy and Platform 19) Increased revenue through commercialisation Improved customer satisfaction Improved customer experience

28 Signalling Programme – Gauteng Region
Project Name Signalling Programme: Gauteng Stage 1 and 2. Project Description The first stage of the project includes the construction of Gauteng Nerve Centre (GNC) which entails installation of interlocking systems in the Gauteng Region - South. The duration of the project is 5 years. The second stage includes the re-signalling of the system on all other stations in Gauteng with modification of the existing remote control system. Progress Benefits/Impact The progress on GNC construction is 100%. Overall status of completion of Gauteng Stage 1 & Stage 2 combined is 28%. Five stations (Midway, Lenz, Lawley, Stretford and Grasmere) have already been commissioned and ready to migrate to the newly constructed GNC Reduce number of signaling failures. Reduce train delays and cancellations due to signal failures. Improved reaction time from a Centralized Operational Control Centre servicing the Gauteng region. Timeframes Capital Costs Construction ~R3.8 billion

Project Name Signalling Programme: Western Cape Region. Project Description Modification of the existing remote control system. Implementation of the interfacing system with the interlocking system. Re-signalling of the system. Progress Benefits/Impact PRASA appointed Thales/Maziya for the construction and installation of new signalling equipment. Site establishment – 100%. Project management plans – 99%. Overall Progress: 40.4% of detailed designs, ordering long-lead items and installation of first new point sets and Signalling equipment Reduce number of signalling failures. Reduce train delays and cancellations due to signal failures. Improved reaction time from a Centralized Operational Control Centre servicing the whole region. Timeframes Estimated Capital Costs Construction is expected to be completed in December 2018. Total Estimated Cost ~R1.8 billion

34 Progress Detail – Testing Readiness & Schedule
Gibela has taken occupation of the Wolmerton depot – retrofit various components and prepare the train for testing. Static (stationery) tests within Wolmerton depot started in February 2016. Dynamic tests at low speeds within the Wolmerton depot started in March 2016. High speed testing on the De-Wildt mainline is expected to start at the beginning of May 2016.

40 Progress Detail – Deployment Readiness & Schedule
There will be a total of 18 commercial trains delivered between March 2016 and January 2017.  Deployment of the first 8 commercial trains on the Pretoria to Pienaarspoort line is targeted for October 2016, to coincide with October Transport Month. During September 2016, a simulation of the proposed train service to be launched in October 2016 will be run and tested and improvements made, if necessary.  PRASA is also running support programmes such as Change Management, Skills, Customer Communications and Information, Security, Operating and Customer Safety, etc. Target closure for these programmes is end July 2016.

Deployment of Train 3 on the Pretoria to Pienaarspoort main line is targeted for October 2016.  PRASA is on track with the implementation of the various readiness streams for the Pretoria to Pienaarspoort corridor.
