1 GALILEO GALILEI

2 THE FATHER OF THE MODERN SCIENCE

3 HIS LIFE Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa on 15° February 1574, from Vincent Galilei, a musician, and Giulia Ammannati, intelligent but very quarrelsome woman. He died in Arcetri on 8° Januar 1642.

4 His Studies In 1581 he began to study medicine in
Pisa, but immediately he had a great interest for mathematics and physics. First of all he wanted to use mathematics to solve problems about mechanic.

5 Pisa and Padua’s University
For its studies, in 1589 he obtained the teacher’s desk of mathematics at Pisa’s University and in 1592 the government of Venice gave him the teacher’s desk of mathematics at Padua’s University, until 1610.

6 His inventions THE PENDULUM THE TELESCOPE

7 His problems with Vaticano
As a professor of astronomy at University of Pisa, Galileo was required to teach the accepted theory of his time that the sun and all the planets revolved around the Earth. Later at University of Padua he was exposed to a new theory, proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus, that the Earth and all the other planets revolved around the sun. Galileo's observations with his new telescope convinced him of the truth of Copernicus's sun-centrered or heliocentric theory

8 Galileo's support for the heliocentric theory got him into trouble with the Roman Catholic Church. In 1633 the Inquisition convicted him of heresy and forced him to recant (publicly withdraw) his support of Copernicus. They sentenced him to life imprisonment, but because of his advanced age allowed him serve his term under house arrest at his villa in Arcetri outside of Florence.
