Astronomy EOG Milestone Review
6th Grade Earth Science Lost Mountain Middle School
2
1. What did Brahe and Kepler discover?
3
1. Brahe observed and recorded the movement of the planets for years.
Kepler discovered that the mathematical analysis of Brahe’s data did not fit circular orbits. Instead, it fit elliptical orbits. 1.
4
2. Why do lunar eclipses only occur at the full moon?
During a lunar eclipse what is blocked from the Earth?
5
The Earth has to be directly between the moon and the sun for a full lunar eclipse to occur.
When this happens, the Earth is blocking all sunlight from reaching the moon. 2.
6
3. What causes tides?
7
3. Gravity causes an attraction between objects, a pull.
Tides are caused by the amount of pull between the moon and different parts of the Earth. As the Earth rotates, the part of the ocean closest to the moon is pulled by the moon’s gravity. 3.
8
4. What is the difference between revolution and rotation?
9
Spinning on an axis (a real or imaginary line through the center of an object) is called rotation. One spin of the Earth on its’ axis is a day. One object revolving around another is called revolution. One revolution of the Earth around the sun is a year. 4.
10
5. Describe the characteristics of a meteor, a meteorite, and a meteoroid.
11
5. Meteoroid = a chunk of rock or dust in space
Meteor = a meteoroid that has crossed into Earth’s atmosphere Meteorite = a meteor that hits the Earth’s surface 5.
12
6. Where are most asteroids found?
13
The asteroid belt revolves around the sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
6.
14
7. What causes moon phases?
15
7. Sunlight is reflected by the moon towards Earth.
The portion of the moon that we see reflecting light is due to the position of the Earth, sun, and moon. 7.
16
8. How is Earth’s axis tilted when the northern hemisphere has summer?
What part of Earth receives the most direct sunlight?
17
Summer happens in the northern hemisphere when the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun.
The equator receives the most direct sunlight. 8.
18
9. At what moon phases does a solar eclipse occur?
During a solar eclipse what is blocked from the Earth?
19
A solar eclipse occurs During a new moon when the moon passes directly between the Earth and the sun. Sunlight is blocked from reaching the Earth . 9.
20
10. Inertia and Gravity - - - What are they?
21
10. Gravity is force of attraction between two objects, a pull.
Inertia is the tendency of an object to continue moving in a straight line OR to remain still unless something interferes with it. 10.
22
11. What is the geocentric view of the universe?
23
The geocentric view is the theory that Earth is the center of the universe with planets and the sun revolving around it. 11.
24
12. What are the characteristics of a comet?
25
12. Comets Dirty snowball Chunks of ice and dust
Long, narrow orbit around the sun Followed by a trail of gas and dust 12.
26
13. What did Galileo observe?
27
Galileo used a telescope to observe objects in the sky including 4 of Jupiter’s moons and Venus.
13.
28
14. Copernicus – heliocentric
What does it mean and why?
29
Copernicus developed the heliocentric view
Copernicus developed the heliocentric view. His theory was that the Earth and the other planets revolve around the sun. 14.
30
15. There are 3 main types of galaxies in our universe
15. There are 3 main types of galaxies in our universe. What type is the Earth located in and what is its name?
31
Spiral Galaxy The Milky Way Elliptical Galaxy Irregular Galaxy 15.
