Standard, objective and essential Question
S6E1a.. Relate the nature of science to the progression of basic historical scientific theories (geocentric and heliocentric) as they describe our solar system, and Big Bang as it describes the formation of the universe Objectives Students will be able to describe the big bang theory Essential question? - what is the big bang theory and why is it important?
2
Astronomy Study of everything beyond the Earth
3
FIRST STOP
4
The Universe
5
VOCABULARY 1. Theory 2. Primeval atom 3. Big Bang Theory
4. Heliocentric 5. Geocentric
6
Theory Theory = Explanation
A theory is a well organized set of accepted knowledge that explains something Theory = Explanation
7
Along time ago, nothing existed at all.
It was dark, and really hot and there really wasn’t any life
8
Where it all Began Scientists believe that the universe started from a PRIMEVAL ATOM The Primeval atom was a very hot and very dense mass of energy
9
It was made up of metals, gases, and dust
10
One day…
11
All the pieces scattered and formed different things in our universe
12
The Big Bang Theory The Big Bang Theory is the theory that explains how the universe was formed It states that the universe was created when the primeval atom expanded and exploded
13
Draw a picture to help you remember this information
Think pair share Read over notes for a second, tell partner about the big bang theory and the primeval atom
14
Proof for the Big Bang The galaxies are really far apart
the distance between galaxies is still expanding So this bang is probably still happening and creating new galaxies and other things in our universe
15
Where did everything end up?
16
Starter What is the geocentric theory?
What is the heliocentric theory? How are they different? Which theory is actually correct?
17
Two Answers or Theories
Heliocentric 2. Geocentric
18
Geocentric Geo = Earth
19
Geocentric = “Earth Centered”
It means that the Earth is in the center of the universe
21
Heliocentric Helio = sun
22
Heliocentric = “sun centered”
It means that the sun is in the center of the Universe
25
PRACTICE What do scientist believe about the universe?
26
2. The theory that the universe began with a tremendous explosion is called……
3. Explain how the universe began.
27
4. What was the Primeval atom made up of?
5. Given the conditions of the primeval atom, is it possible for anything to live in the atom? Explain your answer
28
Classify the Following as Heliocentric or Geocentric.
Sun Earth Sun centered Earth centered Theory of what is the middle of the universe
29
How are the geocentric and heliocentric views different?
30
FAMOUS PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
31
Ptolemy Believed that the earth was at the center of the universe
32
Copernicus Believed the sun was at the center of the universe
33
Kepler Believed that the planets did revolve around the earth but not in a perfect circle. The sun was at the exact center
34
Galileo First person to use a telescope to look at the stars, planets, universe and so on. This gave him proof that he believed the sun was in the middle
35
Newton Believed sun was in the center of the universe but gravity is what holds everything together in place
36
Practice Classify the following famous as either Heliocentric believers or geocentric believers Copernicus Ptolemy Galileo Newton Kepler
37
Who was the first person to use a telescope?
How are Ptolemy’s theories and Copernicus theories different?
38
Exit Ticket Describe the big bang theory
Describe the heliocentric view Describe the geocentric view What is one thing you would like to know that was not taught today?
