Four meetings so far (last: 2-3 July) Main results so far: Recommendation 135 (2008) on addressing the impacts of climate change on biodiversity (adopted by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention in November 2008) Draft recommendation on further guidance for Parties (2009)

Mandate (reminder) Provide information and guidance to Parties on understanding climate change impacts and threats Provide Parties with tools and support in developing appropriate adaptation measures in national policies regarding the species and habitats protected under the Bern Convention.

Context: Interaction with other GoEs under the Bern Convention: IAS, islands, protected areas+ecological networks Co-operation with other conventions and organisations (IGOs and NGOs): 2010 IYB, CBD COP-10, EU framework Internal co-ordination within CoE Parliamentary Assembly, Congress (local and regional), Directorate of Culture, Human Rights issues, etc.

Meeting on 2-3 July 2009 Get updated information: global, regional, national levels (+NGOs) Discuss three new draft reports: Plants and climate change in Europe Invertebrates and CC in Europe protected areas and CC in Europe Discuss draft recommendation: to be submitted to SC meeting in Nov.09 Discuss future work of the GoE

Adaptation needs of Mediterranean ecosystems Forest biodiversity and fires Continue consideration of IAS/CC Review existing national adaptation strategies for biodiversity Merge and review all guidance

Next steps: 2009: 2010: (one meeting planned)
Finalise three reports and draft recommendation (by end September) Submission to Standing Committee (Bern, November 2009) Publication of previous reports 2010: (one meeting planned) Possibly in Iceland, in June 2010 (tbc) Continue completing the guidance for Parties with additional issues.
