2 URBANIZATION The growing trend in increasing numbers of people living in cities.

3 URBAN Built-up environments that usually have a high population density.

4 RURAL Areas with a low population density located in the countryside outside towns and cities.

5 LAND USE The different ways that people use the land (e.g, industry, commercial, residential).

6 Different Types of Communities
HAMLET

7 HAMLET: A community with a population of fewer than 200 people.
Example: ________________ Cambridge Bay

8 VILLAGE

9 VILLAGE: A community with a population of around 200 to 800 people.
Example: Kars, Ontario

10 TOWN

11 TOWN: A community with a population of around 1000 to 10 000 people.
Example: Richmond, Ontario

12 CITY

13 A community with a population greater than 10 000 people.
Example: Kingston, Ontario

14 CENSUS METROPOLITAN AREA

15 CMA: A community with  a population greater than people, consisting of one or more adjacent municipalities centred on a large urban core. Example: Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

16 RESOURCE-BASED COMMUNITY

17 RESOURCE-BASED COMMUNITIES: Communities that are built around a primary resource.
Example: SUDBURY, Ontario

RESIDENTIAL LAND USE

20 RESIDENTIAL LAND USE: Land that is used for housing.
Example: A house

21 TRANSPORTATION LAND USE

22 TRANSPORTATION LAND USE: The land that is used for transportation systems including parking lots and airports. Example: A Train Station

23 COMMERCIAL LAND USE

24 COMMERCIAL LAND USE: Land that is used for business activities.
Example: A grocery store

25 INSTITUTIONAL LAND USE

26 INSTITUTIONAL LAND USE: The land that is occupied by schools, hospitals, places of worship and government offices. Example: South Carleton High School

27 INDUSTRIAL LAND USE

28 INDUSTRIAL LAND USE: That land that is occupied by factories, warehouses and other secondary industries. Example: Steel Mill Plant

29 OPEN SPACE LAND USE

30 OPEN SPACE LAND USE: The land that is left in its natural state.
Example: A Conservation Area

31 RECREATIONAL LAND USE

32 RECREATIONAL LAND USE: The land that is used for recreational activities (playgrounds, parks and golf courses). Example: Richmond Fair Grounds

33 OTHER FACTORS AFFECTING LAND USE

34 ZONING Bylaws are laws that control the kind and amount of development in an area I.e. the city can’t build a garbage dump beside your house

35 Climate News flash- Canada is cold- this needs to be taken into consideration when building a city Cities like Montreal and Toronto have underground cities (walkways under ground) Another solution is indoor shopping malls

36 Urban Expansion Cities grow and grow and grow and grow- due to increasing population and industry The growth of a city is called “Urban Sprawl” Due to the increase in ubran sprawl we are seeing “new urbanism” come into play
