Comprehending Color
2
“If you think about the way a composer would go in a room and score, let's say, the oboe's gonna play this note, the bassoon's gonna play that note, the french horn will play that note, the resultant sound, the combination of those notes makes kind of a chord, and I'm doing the same thing with color.” Chuck Close Self Portrait, 2000
3
“Color is all. When color is right, form is right
“Color is all. When color is right, form is right. Color is everything, color is vibration like music; everything is vibration.” Marc Chagall Paris Through the Window
4
“He who knows how to appreciate color relationships, the influence of one color on another, their contrasts and dissonances, is promised an infinitely diverse imagery.”
5
Hue This is what we usually mean when we ask "what color is that?"
For example, when we talk about colors that are red, yellow, green, and blue, we are talking about hue. A hue is independent of a tint or shade
6
Primary Colors Red, yellow, and blue.
With these three colors (and black and white) you can make any color. You can not mix any colors to make the primary colors.
7
Secondary Colors You mix: Yellow + Blue= Green
Violet, orange, and green. These colors are made by mixing one primary color with another primary color You mix: Yellow + Blue= Green Red + Blue = Violet (purple) Red + Yellow =Orange
8
Tertiary Color Yellow-orange, orange-red, red-violet, blue-violet, yellow-green, blue-green These colors are made by mixing a primary and a secondary color By mixing: Red + Violet=red-violet Red + Orange=orange-red Blue + Violet=blue-Violet Blue + Green=blue-green Yellow + Green=Yellow-green Yellow + Orange=yellow-orange
