280 ppm ppm CO2 Era pre industrial Climate scientists have observed that carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the atmosphere have been increasing significantly over the past century, compared to the pre-industrial era level of about 280 parts per million (ppm). In 2016, the average concentration of CO2 (403 ppm)1 was about 40% higher than in the mid-1800s, with an average growth of 2 ppm/year in the last ten years.
