Prepositional Phrases

FACT #1: When you begin a sentence with a prepositional phrase, you need to separate it from the rest of the sentence with a comma. Example: During the storm, the family hid in the root cellar. FACT #2: Sentences that start with prepositional phrases are always interesting. If you ever want to make the first sentence in your story sound even better, consider beginning it with a prepositional phrase. Example: "Toward the deafening sound like thunder, ...“ "Under a piece of wood dropped from a lumber truck, ...“ "On the highway between the two towns, ...“ "Among the crowd of on-lookers, ..."

To use prepositional phrases in your writing, you need to know a couple of things.
You need to know the prepositions! Study your prepositions handout often to commit the prepositions to memory. A prepositional phrase contains a preposition and the object of the preposition. Example: Around the house Around is the preposition and house is the object of the preposition. The object of the preposition must be a noun or pronoun.

There MAY be one or more adjectives between the preposition and the object of the preposition in a prepositional phrase. Example: between the two towns adjectives noun preposition
