Chapter 5 Intransitive and Transitive Verbs
So far, we have seen two types of sentences. The first type uses a nominative subject, linking verb (est, sunt), and a predicate nominative. Helen est regina. Helen is a queen. The second type uses a nominative subject and what is called an intransitive verb. Nautae nāvigant. The sailors sail. Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation

Chapter 5 Intransitive and Transitive Verbs
Nautae nāvigant. The sailors sail. The verb does not require a direct object – the sentence remains complete without it. ‘Nāvigant’ is an example of an intransitive verb. Let’s look at another sentence… Rēgīna accūsat. The queen accuses. Unlike the previous sentence, this one kinda leaves us hanging…whom is the queen accusing? Chapter 5 Intransitive and Transitive Verbs
Accusāre is usually a transitive verb. It requires a direct object. Rēgīna accūsat Carolinam. The queen accuses Caroline. Some verbs can be transitive or intransitive. Poēta cantat. The poet sings. Poēta carmen cantat. The poet sings a song. Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation

Chapter 5 Accusative Case
The nominative case names the subject of the sentence – the person or thing who is doing the action of the verb. The accusative case gets its name from accūsāre – Latin for “to accuse”. Chapter 2 Verbs, Vocabulary, and 1st Conjugation
