Definition Underprivileged- A term pertaining to people who are deprived of the social, cultural, and economic benefits that are available to most others in their society (Barker, 1999). Community- a group of individuals or families that share certain values, services, institutions, interests, or geographic proximity (Barker, 1999).

Definition Underserved community- A group of individuals that are deprived of essential services that are needed to enhance quality of life. Examples of essential services include: health, education, transportation, financial and social support.

Barriers Lack of education about immunizations
Parents are not educated about the varies diseases Parents are not educated about the risk of not vaccinating their children

Barriers Lack of Transportation
Communities without public transportation Irregular bus scheduling No personal transportation

Barriers Lack of Financial Resources Minimum Wage Time is Money
Unable to schedule time off

Barriers Lack of Social Support
There is more need for community involvement and support Some may not have a family support network.

How can we increase immunization rates?
Target business that can sponsor immunization outreach Door to door outreach/Immunization Drives National Immunization Campaign Bring Immunizations to the children at school. Monthly follow up phone calls Create Immunization Coalitions

Conclusion In conclusion an underserved community is a group of individuals that are deprived of essential services needed to enhance quality of life. It is imperative that we work together to break down the barriers that hinder children and adolescents and adults from obtaining vaccinations.
