5 Fugitive Slave Law “A black man may be carried away without any reference to a jury. It is only necessary to claim him, and that some villain should swear to his identity. There is more protection there for a horse, for a donkey, or anything, rather than a colored man.”

Born 1811 in Connecticut into prominent religious reform family. Father and brother both highly respected preachers Moved to Cincinnati, Ohio a free city bordering slave state of Kentucky Hatred of slavery grew, felt called to write to bring attention to abolitionist cause. I did not write it. God wrote it. I merely did his dictation- Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Published officially in 1852 as a novel, by 1853 had sold more than a million copies. First chapters of novel originally released in abolitionist newspaper Book’s message on the moral struggle of slavery was able to reach the masses Praised in the North and rebuked in the South for being unfairly critical to the South. “So is this the little lady who made this big war?”- Abraham Lincoln

Harriet Tubman born Araminta Harriet Ross in 1822 in Maryland Born into slavery “Grew up like a neglected weed” 1849 successfully ran away and made it to the North Returned to the South to help slaves escape between 8-19 times.
