3 President Abraham Lincoln opposed the secession of the Southern states, arguing that the U.S. government was a union of people and not of states. President Abraham Lincoln (1861–1865)

4 Lincoln justified fighting the Civil War by stating that his oath of office required him to defend and preserve the Union (U.S.). Confederacy (South) attacks and seizes Fort Sumter, in South Carolina (April 12–14, 1861); Civil War begins

6 During the Civil War, the North had more human resources and war materials.

In 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free all of the slaves in the South and help the North win the Civil War by adding a humanitarian objective to it. Signing the Emancipation Proclamation (1863)
