8. The Union now consisted of 23 states and the Confederacy consisted of 11 states. Four Union states (which were also slave states) were unsure whether to stay in the Union or join the Confederacy. They became known as Border States.

10. For Lincoln the main reason for fighting was to keep the United States together. Other Northerners fought to end slavery. Southerners were fighting to preserve states’ rights and slavery. They believed they were defending their homeland and their way of life.
