Country created by states that seceded from the Union. They were, in order of secession: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas; Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Jefferson Davis: President of the Confederacy

8 General Robert E. Lee, : Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. A great tactical general, he won battles despite being outnumbered. His over-reaching in 1863 led to the critical defeat at Gettysburg. He has, in memory, become the great hero of the Confederate cause.
