In Hispanic countries, prices of meals and of everyday items are often expressed in thousands of pesos, colones, and so on. Therefore, it is important to become accustomed to understanding and using numbers over 100.

Cien is used before a noun or as the number 100 when counting. Ciento is used with numbers 101 to 199.
Hay cien estudiantes en la clase. Cien, ciento uno,…
Sólo tengo cien pesos. La torta cuesta ciento un pesos.
In Spanish, there is no y between hundreds and a smaller number, although and is often used in English.
205 (two hundred and five) = doscientos cinco
NOT doscientos y cinco

When the numbers modify a noun, they agree in gender.
Trescientos alumnos y quinientas alumnas
Years above 1000 are not broken into two-digit groups as they are in English.
1971 (nineteen seventy one) = mil novecientos setenta y uno
NOT diecinueve setenta y uno
In writing numbers, Spanish commonly uses a period where English uses a comma, and vice-versa.
