Using Peer Review in Your Classroom
Peer Review is typically used to teach students the value of constructive criticism, compare and contrast their work with others, and learn that there is always room for improvement. During Peer Review students can focus on higher-order concerns such as the thesis, organization, and development of ideas in their paper.

Wendy Bishop “Helping Peer Writing Groups Succeed”
Bishop agrees with the gains and drawbacks to this peer review. Difficult to gauge how much time students may need to read, discuss, and edit each other's paper. Students need to be trained how to edit correctly; time-consuming but essential for their writing skills. Teachers must devote some time to “designing, and controlling, directing and correcting the groups.” Students are unsure of what to look for, reluctant to critique others work, and insecure of their ability to edit. Noted how some teachers felt let down by a method that has been presented in glowing terms yet can prove problematic in practice” (Bishop 309). Suggests appointing roles as a solution.

Lindsey M. Jesnek “Peer Editing in the 21st Century College Classroom: Do Beginning Composition Students Truly Reap the Benefits? Like Bishop, Jesnek also saw issues with peer editing. Major problem seemed to be with student ability and student’s “social graces”. To avoid confrontation or possibly critiquing incorrectly, students would talk about trivial things, often going on tangents or being too generous in comments. (Similar to Bedley’s students) Decided to keep peer review.

As long as someone finds it useful, continue to use peer review!
