1
Heat Transfer Heat is transferred in three basic ways: CCR
2
Conduction: heat transfer within materials and between objects in contact
Vibrating loose atoms transferring energy to neighbors Conductors – conduct heat well (e.g. metals: silver, copper, iron) Insulators – poor conductor, delay transfer of heat (e.g. wood, wool, air) (Kinesthetic simulation – pass the ball)
3
Convection: heat transferred by flowing currents in a fluid (liquid or gas)
Hot air rises (becomes less dense) and cools as it rises Ex. Hot water heating in a home, air currents by lake
4
Examples Weather Insulation Cooking
5
Radiation: heat transfer by electromagnetic waves, heat rays
Needs no material medium (goes through a vacuum) e.g Sun, fire, lamp filament
