Brutus and Antony’s Funeral Speech Analysis

Let’s Review Yesterday’s Activity!
Pick one of the following options and on a fresh sheet of paper complete this activity. Re-read Brutus’s speech at Caesar’s funeral. Think about what he is really saying in this speech. You have the text- write out the subtext. Re-read Mark Antony’s speech at Caesar’s funeral. Think about what he is really saying in this speech. You have the text- write out the subtext. In your own words, write what you think is going on in his mind at this time. We hear what he says out loud, but not what he is thinking. What do you think he is thinking as he gives this speech? What are his emotions?
9
What are they REALLY saying?
Who has more SUBTEXT, Brutus or Antony? What does Brutus really mean when he speaks? What about Antony?

Working with your ASSIGNED group based on the colors of the numbers on your desks…
Identify the BEST examples of ETHOS, PATHOS, & LOGOS in Brutus and Antony’s speeches. Write each example on a sticky note (you will use SIX total sticky notes). Place the examples in the corresponding area on the chalkboard. You have 10 minutes. Work fast and work TOGETHER!

Brutus’ Speech ETHOS PATHOS LOGOS
Source: ETHOS PATHOS LOGOS “Believe me for mine honor”. By saying this, Brutus is saying that the people should listen to him and believe him because of his reputation as an honorable person. “I did love Caesar, but I loved Rome more.” When Brutus says this, it makes the audience feel patriotism and that Brutus puts his loyalty for his country above his friendship. “Would you rather that Caesar be alive and you be slaves?” Brutus says this to give proof to the audience that he was right to kill Caesar. If Caesar had lived, he would have enslaved every Roman citizen by taking over power and becoming a dictator.

Antony’s Speech ETHOS PATHOS LOGOS
Source: ETHOS PATHOS LOGOS “Friends, Romans and countrymen…” By starting his speech this way, he shows that he is “one of them” (a common person) . “Caesar was my friend, faithful and just to me.” This makes the audience feel sympathy for Antony. Brutus said Caesar was ambitious and that was why he had to die, yet in his speech Antony gives several logical arguments and proof that Caesar was not ambitious.

If you need additional help analyzing these orations for rhetoric, the following Prezi is a great resource: julius-caesar-funeral-speech- project/
14
Anaphora… Discuss with your number color group. You have 2 minutes!
Definition: the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses. Where do you see this persuasive device used in Brutus’ funeral oration? “As Caesar loved me, I weep for him; as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant, I honour him: but, as he was ambitious, I slew him.”
15
Critical Thinking… Why might Shakespeare have chosen to have Brutus speak in prose and Antony in verse? How do the ways Brutus and Antony use of the word ‘honour’ in their speeches compare? Why is the word so important in this situation?
16
Exit Ticket Who is more convincing in this scene? Why?
Use a sticky note to answer the question to the right. Place your answer WITH YOUR NAME ON IT on the city scape poster before you leave today!
