The lines in between describe either the starting word or its opposite. On paper these poems look like a diamond, so we call them after the Italian word for diamond-- diamante. Lines 3 and 4 have five to seven syllables and also rhyme with each other. So they smashed that Old Man with a gong.

13 Definition of Sonnets English (or Shakespearean) sonnets are lyric poems that are 14 lines long falling into three coordinate quatrains and a concluding couplet. A Couplet is a Stanza of only two lines which usually rhyme. A Stanza consists of two or more lines of poetry that together form one of the divisions of a poem. The stanzas of a poem are usually of the same length and follow the same pattern of meter and rhyme and are used like paragraphs in a story.

14 O thou my lovely boy by William Shakespeare
O thou, my lovely boy, who in thy power Dost hold Time's fickle glass his fickle hour; Who hast by waning grown, and therein show'st Thy lovers withering, as thy sweet self grow'st. If Nature, sovereign mistress over wrack, As thou goest onwards, still will pluck thee back, She keeps thee to this purpose, that her skill May Time disgrace, and wretched minutes kill. Yet fear her, O thou minion of her pleasure! She may detain, but not still keep her treasure. Her audit, though delayed, answered must be, And her quietus is to render thee.

15 Now, you will create your own “Love Poem” using one of the formats we have discussed.
