Creating a Web Site using a free site and a file manager
Please use speaker notes for additional information! This presentation talks about creating a web site. I am going to use for my free site. You can use any provider you want, but I like brinkster.
2
Click on file manager to be able to upload your pages.
I created a free account where the user is cissudent. This gives me an address where I can view my site of www32.brinkster.com/cisstudent.
3
The db directory was there
The db directory was there. I creted the directories begin and setup by using Create Dir and entering the name. I am going to setup my web site in the directory setup. On the next slide you will see that I have clicked on setup and made it the active directory.
4
Note that there are no files in the setup directory yet.
5
I went to browse and found the page I wanted to load on my hard drive
I went to browse and found the page I wanted to load on my hard drive. When I double clicked on it the name showed up next to the word browse. Remember that your home page should be called index.html. Remember that the first page of my site has frames. The main page is called index.html. Now I need to load the pages for the frames.
6
I am also loading CISPage3. html and Page3content. html
I am also loading CISPage3.html and Page3content.html. On the next slide I will show the actual upload process.
7
Now I click on Start Files(s) Upload
Now I click on Start Files(s) Upload. I first make sure that setup is the open directory that will receive the html files.
8
This shows that the three files have been uploaded
This shows that the three files have been uploaded. Now I follow the direction to click here to return to the file manager.
9
As you can see, the three files are now loaded in the setup
As you can see, the three files are now loaded in the setup. To see the files I am going to click on index.html since that is the main page and then click on view. This allows me to test and look at the page from the file manager.
10
Note that the address is www32. brinkster. com/cisstudent/setup/index
Note that the address is www32.brinkster.com/cisstudent/setup/index.html Again we are viewing this from file manager. Also note that the colors are different. This is because there is a cascading style sheet associated with the pages that has not yet been loaded. The pages say that maincss.css is located in the subdirectory css so I now need to create a subdirectory css and put maincss.css into that page.
11
I am now creating the subdirectory css. Then I will load maincss
I am now creating the subdirectory css. Then I will load maincss.css from my hard drive into the subdirectory.
12
I have now successfully create the subdirectory css under the directory setup and I am loading the file maincss.css into the subdirectory. Note that once I create css, I had to double click on it to make it the active directory.
13
I have now successfully uploaded maincss. css into setup\css
I have now successfully uploaded maincss.css into setup\css. Now I will click on view to see my page.
14
I will now click on the up arrow to return to setup and click on index
I will now click on the up arrow to return to setup and click on index.html and select view to see the impact of loading the css page.
15
I now see the pages with the right colors.
16
I then went and typed in my address which is www32. brinkster
I then went and typed in my address which is www32.brinkster.com/cisstudent/setup/ and it loaded the page. Note that it defaulted to index.html so I do not need to put the name of the page. I choose to do this in a subdirectory called setup because I use this site for other things. If I had put the index.html file in the root directory instead of the subdirectory, I would not have had to make setup part of the path.
