The question of slavery would be decided by popular sovereignty when these territories apply to be states. This overturned the Missouri Compromise rule that there would be no slavery above the 36’30’ line. Stephen Douglas proposed and got this bill passed so that he could build a railroad to the Pacific from his home state of Illinois. This would bring in more money for its economy. However this railroad was not built until 1862 because the Kansas Nebraska caused outrage in the North and bloodshed in Kansas. 3A. The Pottawatamie Massacre was an event in Kansas in which there was a bloody faceoff between proslavery and antislavery forces. John Brown and his men killed five pro-slavery men. This was a response to the Sack of Lawrence. Pro-slavery forces destroyed and sacked the city of Lawrence in anger when they were unable to find anti-slavery men. They wanted to capture anti-slavery forces for treason. John Brown was angered by the Sack of Lawrence so he retaliated by killing pro-slavery men. He considered his actions as having been ordered by God. This triggered a civil war in Kansas in which 200 people were killed. It resulted in what became known as “Bleeding Kansas”
