What is a smart city? “A developed urban area that creates sustainable economic development and high quality of life by excelling in multiple key areas; economy, mobility, environment, people, living, and government. Excelling in these key areas can be done so through strong human capital, social capital, and/or ICT (Information Communication Technology) infrastructure.” The Smart City and the Aging Population The use of data to improve everyday life The growth of cloud computing, new developments in machine learning, and the internet of things has made immense amounts of data available The embedding of such Information and Communications Technologies (ICT’s) in government systems Spotting problems before they occur- fire and food Sensor equipped pipes, parking meters, lights, etc. ICTs bring people together to enhance the innovation and knowledge that they offer. Smart city council Human capital- skills, knowledge, experience possessed by individuals Social capital- networks of relationships within a society that enable it to function effectively Information communication technology- stresses role of unified communications, and integration of all technologies (internet of things, everything is connected)

Smart People Smart Governance Smart Economy Smart Environment Smart Mobility Smart Living What distinguishes a smart city from a regular city of old? 6 categories of indicators recognized by the Smart Cities Council as key criteria in the classification of smart cities Smart People: An informed public is key to the success of any new smart city initiatives. People need to be knowledgeable about, or sometimes just aware, of new systems that provide opportunity for public participations. Smart Governance: data sharing between gov’t agencies, traditionally belonging in different silos, greatly increase the intelligence and efficiency of urban systems like waste and water management. In Atlanta, acoustic sensors alert officials to abnormalities in water pressure, providing early warning of a water main burst. Traffic cameras and gunshot sensors, meanwhile, can alert police to crime as it happens. Smart Environment: motion sensored streetlights, and a more informed SmartGrid dynamically react to the needs of the city’s people to save billions of dollars and drastically cut the Carbon footprint. Smart mobility: Streamlined traffic is a current goal in smart mobility. Sensors on smarter roads are helping to make real-time decisions now in small ways. How many of you have seen a dynamic speed limit sign like this in Atlanta? Not really that helpful now, but there is clearly enormous potential for real-time data to become more useful as we see the rise of autonomous vehicles. Atlanta is actually one of 10 cities partnering with AT&T to become a smarter city Smart living: At the Southface Energy Institute in Atlanta, sensors keep track of how many people walk into each room and feed that data to the a/c Ultimate goal of smart cities = smart living, make people safer, healthier & happier Next, I’ll pass it off to Scott to walk through some pros and cons

Pros and cons of smart cities
+ Provide business opportunities Accommodate growing population Solve existing problems Improve overall security - Invasion of privacy Capital needed Limited access to certain technologies due to the lack of skills Ok so I’ll be talking about the pros and cons of smart cities. We’ll start with the pros. First of all, there are endless opportunities associated with smart cities. From a business standpoint, IT solutions firms, solar energy firms, construction companies, and many more types of services will be required to move this project forward. From an employment standpoint, students and professionals in the fields of programming, consulting, and engineering will be in very high demand. Secondly, with more and more people moving into urban areas, smart cities can help to effectively accommodate this population through upgrading the quality of service while requiring less physical space. Next, smart cities can solve many existing problems in our society today such as traffic and pollution, which we will talk more about in the next slide. Lastly, many smart cities would use street cameras to catch criminals and alarm systems to quickly identify an emergent situation, which serve to drastically improve a city’s overall security. However, smart city has its own disadvantages as well. With cameras installed everywhere, there may be a potential invasion of privacy as most people do not wish to be monitored at all times. Also, like all grand infrastructure plans, a large amount of capital is required to make this program a success, which may not seem affordable to some cities at this time. Lastly, elder individuals and people who are less tech savvy might experience limited access to certain technologies and resources due to the lack of skills. These are definitely things we need to consider.

Smart cities in action:
Now, let’s look at an example of a smart city in action. Over in Dubai, more than 50 smart services from 22 government entities have been initiated. Using the government provided app, dubai now, you can do things like paying a speeding ticket, which likely captured you on a public camera, and then the ticket is ed to you directly. With the same app, you can also pay your electric bill, call a taxi, and track a package you sent to a friend all through the high speed wifi that is now provided in most public locations. With smart sensors placed along roads and parking spots, you could easily avoid traffic and figure out where to park in the city. In terms of buildings and utility usage, Dubai has introduced the Building Information Modeling, which is a model based process that helps to design and manage buildings. Within each particular building, there are wireless sensors that can track energy consumption, water-pipe flow rates, and much more. In 2015, the smart healthcare initiative in dubai developed the Hospital Information Systems to enable easy access to a patient’s file and using the available data to choose the most affordable healthcare plan for that patient. If you look at these two pictures of Dubai in 1990 vs. now, Dubai has come a long way. But it is important to note that the new buildings and technologies are simply a platform, it is the people and the vision that make smart cities happen in the first place, and we are definitily excited to see what Dubai has to offer in the future.
