Welcome to Authentic Assessment in Early Intervention. This module focuses on one particular and very important aspect of the evaluation and assessment process called authentic assessment.

2. This module was developed by a workgroup that formed out of the Early Intervention-Early Childhood Professional Development Community of Practice. Members of the workgroup have extensive experience developing and delivering early intervention training. This module is one part of a Universal Online Part C Early Intervention Curriculum that may be used to support quality early intervention practices.

When you are finished with this module you will have foundational knowledge about what authentic assessment is and why it is important. You will also have an understanding of who participates in authentic assessment, where it may happen, when it can be done, and within what early intervention processes it can occur. As this module comes to a close you will have a chance to practice and reflect on the ways you can apply authentic assessment in your work with young children and their families.

9. Evidence Based Practices
DEC Recommended Practices:
Assessment is the process of gathering information to make decisions. Assessment informs intervention and, as a result, is a critical component of services for young children who have or are at risk for developmental delays/disabilities and their families.
The module includes content that derives from the early intervention evidence base, including the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) Recommended Practices (RP). The DEC RPs define assessment as “the process of gathering information to make decisions. Assessment informs intervention and, as a result, is a critical component of services for young children who have or are at risk for developmental delays/disabilities and their families.”

In early intervention and early childhood special education, assessment is conducted for the purposes of screening, determining eligibility for services, individualized planning, monitoring child progress, and measuring child outcomes.
The DEC Recommended Practices also inform us that “In early intervention and early childhood special education, assessment is conducted for the purposes of screening, determining eligibility for services, individualized planning, monitoring child progress, and measuring child outcomes.“
Within this module you will learn about how authentic assessment is applied with these practices in mind.

11. Evidence-Informed PD Practices
This module also strives to achieve these learning objectives by implementing evidence-informed professional development practices. This includes introducing, demonstrating and explaining key characteristics of authentic assessment in early intervention.
Additionally, this module includes interactive activities, opportunities for self reflection and suggestions to help you apply what you have learned to your work with young children birth to three and their families.

Evidence-informed professional development practices inform us that individuals who complete an online module may gain new knowledge but this doesn’t always equate to acquisition and application of new knowledge and skills. Therefore a companion tool for individual learners and two administrative tools for individuals at the state and/or local level to use to support ongoing professional development have been developed as an accompaniment to this module.

The Facilitator’s Guide is an administrative tool that includes additional resources, extended learning activities, and strategies for supporting ongoing learning on authentic assessment. Individuals who provide ongoing professional development may choose to use the Facilitator's Guide, along with the Learner’s Guide, to support reflective supervision, self assessment activities, small group discussions at staff meetings, and other learning opportunities.

17. Check for Understanding – Administrative Tool

Questions can be embedded into Learning Management Systems
The other administrative tool is titled “Check for Understanding.” This tool includes a series of questions including multiple choice, open ended reflective activities, and case scenarios that may be used to help assess knowledge gained and learning gaps that still need to be filled. Check for Understanding questions can be embedded into Learning Management Systems or used as a tool to accompany supervision activities upon completion of the module.
