Sacagawea was a Shoshone interpreter best known for being the only woman on the Lewis and Clark Expedition into the American West. She was the daughter of a Shoshone chief. She was born around 1788 in Lemhi County, Idaho. At around age 12, she was captured by an enemy tribe (The Hidatsa) and sold to a French-Canadian trapper who later became her husband. In November 1804, she was invited to join the Lewis and Clark expedition as a Shoshone interpreter. Years after the expedition, she died at Fort Manuel in what is now Kenel, South Dakota, around 1812. Sacagawea **1788 – 1812**

Let’s answer! 1.- Why do you think the members of the expedition were greeted with excitement? The people of the villages were curious about the gigantic dog and the man with black skin. The were excited to meet people from faraway places. 2.- Why do you think having an interpreter was important for the corps? They needed someone who could communicate with the people whose homelands they would cross during the expedition.

She knew landmarks, knew the people, New Native American languages, and new what was safe to eat. 4.- What does “lost his wits” mean in the last paragraph on page 592 ? It means panick. Not knowing what to do.

Let’s answer! 5.- What supplies for the expedition does the author mention? He mentions gunpowder, medicine and scientific instruments. 6.- Why do you think the success of the expedition depended upon having the supplies? They needed gunpowder to hunt and to defend themselves. They needed medicine in case they got sick or injured ad they needed scientific instruments to collect information about the lands the explored.

Let’s answer! 1.- Why did the corps build wagons after entering mountain country? A waterfall made it impossible for them to continue travelling up the river by boat. 2.- What can you infer from the fact that Sacagawea recognized landmarks? She had been there before. This was the place where she had been born and where she lived before she was kidnapped.

Let’s answer! 3.- What do you think made Sacagawea a good translator?
She could speak Shoshone, Hidatsa, English and possibly French. She was very smart. She new what was important for both parties, Indians and white men. 4.- What details support the idea that the journey over the Rocky Mountains was very difficult ? The mountain paths were very dangerous. The explorer’s feet froze and they did not have enough food.

Let’s answer! 1.- What does Sacagawea’s gift tell you about her relationship with Captain Clark? She respects him and she is grateful for his friendship. 2.- Why was it so important to Sacagawea that she accompany Captain Clark to see the Ocean? She wanted to go because she had travelled so far and did not want to return without having seen the ocean.

Let’s answer! 3.- What might the Corps of Discovery have divided into two groups at this point in the mission? They probably wanted to explore the Marias River, but they did not want to send the entire expedition to do it. 4.- The text says Sacagawea gazed at the earth lodges of the villages. What is a lodge? A lodge is a kind of shelter.
