Completing the Square – Day 1
5-5 Completing the Square – Day 1 SWBAT -Solve quadratic equations by completing the square. -Write quadratic equations in vertex form. Holt Algebra 2
3
Vocabulary completing the square
Many quadratic equations contain expressions that cannot be easily factored. For equations containing these types of expressions, you can use square roots to find roots.
4
Read as “plus or minus square root of a.”
Reading Math
5
Solving Equations by Using the Square Root Property
1. x2 - 6x + 9 = 16 2. x2 + 12x + 36 = 28
6
Think-Pair-Share 4. x2 + 8x + 16 = 49 3. x2 + 4x + 4 = -64
7
Complete the square for the expression
Complete the square for the expression. Write the resulting expression as a binomial squared. x2 – 14x +
8
Complete the square for the expression
Complete the square for the expression. Write the resulting expression as a binomial squared. x2 + 9x + x2 + 4x + x2 + 9x + x2 + 4x +
10
Warm Up Write an equation of a line with an y intercept of 2. Is f(x) = a linear equation. Explain. Explain why the graph of x + 3y = 0 has only one intercept.

Completing the Square – Day 2
5-5 Completing the Square – Day 2 SWBAT -Solve quadratic equations by completing the square. -Write quadratic equations in vertex form. Holt Algebra 2
12
If a quadratic expression of the form x2 + bx cannot model a square, you can add a term to form a perfect square trinomial. This is called completing the square.
13
You can complete the square to solve quadratic equations.
14
Solve the equation by completing the square.
x2 = 12x – 20
15
Solve the equation by completing the square.
18x + 3x2 = 45 x2 + 6x = 15
16
Solve the equation by completing the square.
x2 – 2 = 9x
17
Solve the equation by completing the square.
